PROJECT Swingy Linen Skirt

Swingy Linen Skirt

This project isn’t a freebie, but sometimes it’s best to pay for a good pattern – knitted skirts are one of those.  Customers occasionally ask me about knitted skirts, especially for the summer, and I think this one looks great. Linen isn’t a light-weight fibre, but it’s cool to the touch, and wears like a monster. It’s drape is also perfect for a swingy, casual skirt.

One note about both linen and skirts – they grow and stretch – so don’t make your skirt longer than needed (you might even want to go a bit shorter and add to it after if you want more length).

Hips:  32 (34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52)”;  81 (86, 91, 97, 102, 107, 112, 117, 122, 127, 132)cm

Waist: 4”/10cm less than hips; adjust with elastic.

Length: Length is given as worn at natural waist. Short (knee length) approx. 24”/60cm; long (mid-calf) approx. 30”/76cm.

FREEBIE Notched Tank

Notched Hem Tank

What a great summer tank – and a freebie too! Make it in loose, cool linen for a timeless, casual summer look. I think it would also make a great tunic – just knit it longer. As always with linen, knit a tension swatch first and WASH it to get an accurate gauge measurement.

This piece is designed to fit with 2 inches of ease (2 inches larger than your body). Ample is shown in size 37.

  • Finished Chest Circumference: 34 (37, 40, 43, 46)”
  • Finished Length from Shoulder to Bottom Edge (Back): 24 ¼ (24 ¾, 25 ¾, 26, 27)”
  • Finished Length from Underarm to Bottom Edge (Front): 16 (16, 16 ½, 16 ½, 17)”

FREEBIE Linen Shrug (now with links!)

Linen Shrug

Sometimes I come across patterns that I think would make a really great project, and so I share! I thought this little sweater (Linen Shrug) was the perfect go-to summer cardigan: a simple, relatively simple knit, light, airy, machine washable, and infinitely wearable. Great for knitting and for wearing, my favourite combination! And the pattern is FREE, and it doesn’t seem to use a lot of yarn (see materials below).

The garment is worked in one piece from wrist cuff to wrist cuff. Shaping is made with short rows.

This pattern is knit with linen at a loose-ish gauge, and as we’ve learned from our past projects in linen this fibre is stretchy,  so consider making a size smaller than you normally would (I’ll be making a small for myself).

Also, don’t forget to swatch first and WASH YOUR SWATCH to get accurate measurements. Linen is stiff when you knit with it but loosens up completely in the wash, and you won’t be able to get an accurate gauge without washing. If you’ve already made On the Beach in the same yarn, Louet Euroflax Sport, you should already have an idea about gauge.

To wash Louet Euroflax Sport, put the garment/swatch in a lingerie bag and machine wash on cold. Machine dry on coolest setting, some people remove it while it’s still kind of damp to but you don’t have to (I never bother).

The pattern’s tension is quite loose (17 sts = 4″), so if in doubt get an extra skein of yarn if you want to make your tension tighter.

XS (S, M, L, XL) – Bust: 32(34, 36, 40, 44)”

Friday Freebie/Finished Project

This week’s Freebie is also a finished project, and I’m super pleased with it! I started this simple spring/summer pullover a little late in the season last year and lay fallow over the winter, half finished. Lucky sweater that it is, I caught a virus and had a nice, long visit with my couch and Netflix last weekend (watch the new season of House of Cards, it was excellent).

Louet Euroflax Project On the Beach Brown 1

On The Beach

I initially took on this project to learn something new things: 1. knitting with linen, and 2. try making a contiguous sleeve (a method for making a sweater with set-in style sleeves that is knit in the round, from the top-down).

The contiguous sleeves look great, I just followed the instructions and they worked perfectly. Unfortunately, I made  that portion of the sweater last summer and the technique has since been wiped from my memory. I’ll have to give it another go on another pattern. I find the sweater fits large, but I think it was designed to have a lot of ease. If I did  it again I’d make at least one size smaller size, but I’m not normally into oversized garments.

The linen also looks great, and the blocking was super easy (washer & dryer). The pure linen yarn doesn’t behave like any other yarn, so take a look at my notes on Ravelry before starting. You’ll definitely want to make a tension swatch and block it before casting on. If you find Linen as bit over budget you can easily substitute Cascade Ultra Pima or Cascade Ultra Pima Paints.

New! Louet Euroflax Sport

Louet Euroflax linen is the paradigm of natural, summer linen yarns. It’s extremely breathable and summer sweaters feel cool. It’s also machine wash and dryable, and with wearing it will become very soft with a beautiful lustrous silky effect. It feels stiff in the skein but loosens and softens up tremendously with wash and wear. It’s also one of the only yarns that looks and feels better the *more* you wash and wear it!
In addition to garments (pullovers, cardigansdresses, skirts, wraps, teestanks & camis, shrugs, etc) Euroflax is also great for homewares like bags, tea-towels (to satisfy your inner Martha Stewart), table runners, curtains, facecloths, pillows, blankets, soap-sacks. After you have worked with Euroflax linen, you will definitely want to use it some more!
