FREEBIE Bulky Mobius Cowl

Bulky Mobius Cowl

Our Bulky Mobius Cowl is a great little last minute gift. It works up fast on 10mm/US15 needles and the mobius technique makes it entertaining. The yarn, Malabrigo Rasta, is stunning: it’s buttery soft and I’ve never seen a skein that didn’t knit up like a Monet painting. Plus, it’s a one-skein project!

Finished Project: Pisti Mobius

Finally, a finished project! You aren’t alone,  we occasionally hit road-blocks and ruts too.

Mineville Angora Wool pisti mobius

Pisti Mobius

The thing about spring is you still need outerwear, but you can’t bear to look at your winter duds another minute. Something fresh is in order for the season of renewal, and we thought something light, airy, and colourful was in order. Only one skein of Mineville Angora Wool was needed to make this voluminous cowl, we added an extra pattern round, and we still had 20g of yarn left! The pattern uses a special Mobius Cast-On, it isn’t hard and you can use a free video tutorial  to learn it (see below). The pattern is free, and very simple (I apply the K.I.S.S. principle to stuff like this).

This is an easy and satisfying project for a simple, spring cowl. It’s really a no-brainer, the yarn’s self-striping colour and soft texture do most of the work. The pattern uses a Mobius Cast On, which is easy to learn.
To learn this easy new skill you can watch Cat Bohrdi’s great Intro to Mobius Knitting tutorial on you tube. Cat’s instructions are clear and easy to follow and you’ll be an expert in no time!
NOTE: You can not substitute a normal cast on using circular needles to create a mobius – it doesn’t work. By twisting the stitches, you’ll end up with a full twist in your knitting, and you only want a half twist (the mobius).
The yarn used has a very high cotton and silk content, both of which tend to stretch and grow. If you think your cowl is too small, don’t worry, it’ll loosen up.

The pattern is very simple, fast, and satisfying for time when you just need to produce something FAST. It is knit in the round using a really long circular needle and a nifty little cast on just for mobius knitting. To learn this easy new skill you can watch Cat Bohrdi’s great Intro to Mobius Knitting tutorial on you tube. Cat’s instructions are clear and easy to follow and you’ll be an expert in no time! The yarn we’ve used is handpainted. It is soft and has a slight sheen because of it’s silk content. Please note that silk has a tendency to grow with wear, so if you want your cowl bigger I suggest you block it bigger and if you want it smaller either subtract some sts from the cast on or reduce your needle size. That said, the look is big, loose and casual and it’s easy to go with the flow of this garment. If you want to make the cowl wider without using more yarn work exclusively in the knit stitch: the cowl won’t be reversible but ribbing sucks up yarn.
