Q & A Choosing a Size (Fit & Measurement)

I received some really good questions this week after posting about Men’s sweaters, and since I love sharing I thought some of you might also want to hear the answer …

This would be my first time making a sweater and I am not sure how to measure the finished chest dimension?

1. Measuring

Great Question! We often understand how our own body relates to clothes and fit, but it’s harder with someone else, even when they are close to you. The most important place for a sweater to fit, especially for women, is in the shoulders. For women you can adjust the bust size, but you can’t change the shoulders. For men, the chest measurement is an anchor. Use a measuring tape and with a t-shirt on (or whatever the recipient will be wearing under their sweater) measure the circumference of the widest part of their chest, just under their underarms. Here is a short article about how to take a chest measurement:

Amy Herzog also has good little videos on how to measure:

If you really want to learn more about this, check out Amy Herzog’s Knit to Flatter class on Craftsy. FYI: Knitwear designers use the measurements from the charts from the Craft Yarn Council (picture below) – we’ll talk about those next.

2. Choosing a Size

Choosing the right size also involves ease. Ease is the amount of space between a sweater and the body it is on. Positive ease is extra space, so the more positive ease, the looser the garment will be. Negative ease is the lack of space between a body and the garment, so the how much the garment will be stretching around you. zero ease means the garment is the same size as the body. After measuring, you need to decide how much ease you want in your sweater; for example, in the size section a pattern might suggest the garment be worn with 2″ to 4″ of positive ease. Ease is the amount of space between a sweater and the body it is on.

You need to make an executive decision and decide how loose or tight a fit you want (see below for a Measurement Hack that can help with the decision making process). If you want a fitted look, make sure the size is around 2″ bigger than the body size you measured above. In this case, if you have a person with a 38″ chest then you may want to choose a size that’s in the 39 to 41″ range. If you want a looser fit you can choose a size with 4″ of ease. For your person above, you might go for a size in the 43 to 45″ range.

For more on ease and measuring you can go straight to the source, the Craft Yarn Council’s directives on Fit, Measurement and Size. They show you the basics of how to measure all the body parts, what different fits mean, and links to all the size charts are in the list on the right side of the screen (here’s a link to the men’s size chart).

There are a couple things to also keep in mind, that may throw a wrench in your plans

  • Different fibres behave differently, and some work better with less ease. Fibres like linen, silk, some cottons, alpaca, camel, cashmere, some superwash yarns, etc … they don’t have a lot of memory and do better with less ease. To make things more complicated, how a yarn will behave also depends on the spin and construction of the yarn.
  • The yarn you choose takes up physical space in the sweater; the thicker your yarn is, the more ease you need. 6″ of ease might be roomy with a worsted weight yarn knit on 4.5mm/US7 needles, but it’ll be closer to a classic fit with a Super-bulky weight yarn knit on 10mm/US15 needles. This is why the sizing might look a bit large in patterns designed with thick yarns.

If you’d like to read more from anothre author, check out this article from Tin Can Knits on Fit and Size and Measurement (they’re great designers, their patterns are very reliable, I recommend them frequently).

Babies & Kids Sizing Hack

By the way, the size charts from the Craft Yarn Council are EXTREMELY helpful when choosing a pattern size for babies and kids. Here’s the scenario: the child you’re knitting for is a ‘size 4’, but the pattern only gives sizes in chest measurements. So, you can check the children’s size chart, and under size 4 it lists the average chest size is 23″ (the charts give the average actual body measurements, not garment measurements). So you would want to choose a size that around 25″ to fit a size 4 child.

Measurement Hack

If you don’t have an actual body to measure, or you don’t know what kind of fit they like, try to find a sweater or sweatshirt that’s approximately the same thickness as your yarn (don’t use a thin cashmere sweater to measure for a thicker worsted weight yarn – your ease will be off). Lay the sweater out on a hard, flat surface (like a table or the floor, not the sofa), and take a measurement across the chest at the underarms. This gives you half of the full chest measurement you’ll be looking for in the pattern.

PRE-ORDER Sweaters for Men

Everybody is knitting these days, so we’re trying to make more options easily accessible for you. I’ve been adding new Pre-Order Kits to our website, and I’ve been happy to fill in a much neglected area, sweaters for men. The projects below are a selection of the kits we’ve uploaded (mostly a combination of handome sweaters on guys I wouldn’t kick out of bed for eating crackers). You can find even more patterns we can kit-up for you HERE.

Fibres & Colours

People have very different needs and preferences when it comes to their yarn, so we’ve set the kits up in the yarns they were designed in, but have also listed several possible substitutions in different fibres, both machine and hand washable, and we are happy to special order your kit in any of them. Due to the limitations of digital media we’ve also chosen a selection of colours that tend to be popular for men’s sweaters. That said, we know better than most that people love all kinds of colours (I wouldn’t have it any other way), and we are happy and able to order any colour that is available.

Custom Hats

Custom Hats, by Kate Atherly, an awesome knitting instructor and designer, is an ebook that has something for every knitter. It’s not a standard pattern book, this is a complete recipe for making your own custom-fit hats, for any head, with any yarn. Just grab a skein and start knitting. With instructions for slouchy and beanie-style hats, and tutorials added for decorative flourishes like different cuff finishes and pom-poms and tassels, this book has everything you’ll ever need to keep everyone in your family warm.

The recipe includes all the instructions and numbers for three styles of hat with three choices of cuff, in 13 gauges and 17 sizes, covering preemies to XL adult heads. And if those don’t cover your needs, the formulas are included so you can calculate your own.

The book steps you through the whole process: from choosing yarn and determining size right through to finishing, with tutorials for all the key knitting techniques – casting on, working in the round, stretchy and decorative bind-offs, even weaving in the ends. There’s a whole chapter with ideas and instructions for customizing the hat with colour, changing up the hem pattern and style, and adding decorative flourishes like pom-poms and tassels.

Don’t worry, a yardage table will help you make sure you’ve got enough yarn: and there’s lots of tips and tricks for what to do if you think you’re going to run out, and how to use up small quantities of yarn leftovers. There’s even information on making hats for the most delicate of heads: premature babies, cancer patients and others losing their hair because of medical treatments. Photo tutorials and guidance on fit and yarn help you make your first hat perfect. For experienced hat knitters, the advice on customization and straightforward but powerful formulas empower you to get designing.

Kelbourne Woolens Scout

Kelbourne Scout is a classic yarn for the sake of yarn. It’s an unfussy, strong, versatile, heathered wool. Scout is a Dk weight, woolen-spun yarn, so it’s light, airy and springy – perfect for fair isle, cables, or any other technique that requires a bit of definition. Made with 100% Peruvian wool, it’s comfortable to work with and wear (it passes my yarn-o-meter, meaning it’s not as buttery soft as a merino wool, but it isn’t remotely in the itchy or uncomfortable range of fibres).

  • 100% wool
  • 100g/250m (274 yds)
  • 20 to 22 sts = 4″(10cm)
  • DK to light worsted weight
  • 3.75mm/US5 to 4.5mm/US7 needles
  • Feltable
  • Hand wash, lay flat to dry
  • Made in Peru
  • Patterns designed with Scout

Substitutions & A Hack

  1. If you love the projects we’re sharing today but you aren’t a fan of traditional style woolen-spun yarns like Kelbourne Scout (it isn’t itchy, but it also isn’t baby-bum soft), you can substitute the following yarns:

2. If you like knitting with a more traditional yarn, but you find it too itchy for a hat, try lining your hats with a headband sized strip of fleece fabric – it’s also beneficial as it makes the hat warmer!

NEW Yarn Tasting Kits & Special Orders

Berroco Spring Yarn Tasting Kit PRE-ORDER

This season Berroco is doing something neat and is making their Spring Yarn-Tasting kits available to the general public (via their retailers, like us). It contains samples of the new yarns they are launching or promoting this season, which you can swatch and work experiment with. I receive one of these kits every season and I dutifully swatch with my sample to get a feel for the different yarns. It helps me decide what to order for you, but also it gives me insight into what’s out there, even if I don’t want to carry it (sometimes people come to me looking for something specific and I can special order it for them). If enough people purchase a yarn tasting kit we can have a Zoom yarn Tasting Party (I have no idea how that will work, but I’m open to experimentation). If we sell ten kits Berroco will even pitch in a door prize! Please note, these kits are special Pre-Orders, please read at the bottom of the page for more info on that.

Pick a Project, Any Project

Another super cool new thing is that if you like what you see & feel & knit & crochet and want to make an actual project we can now special-order that for you. This applies to all their yarns, for any of their projects (or other projects not designed by them). As long as it is in stock it’s available to us, and if it isn’t we can look into waiting for it to come in. Berroco is also the North American distributor for Lopi and Amano, so we can look into special-ordering projects in those yarns too (Amano is super drool-worthy, their yarns are SOOOO beautiful). Berroco is making it really easy for us to get their yarns into your hands, but it’s a COVID innovation, so take advantage of it while it lasts. I’ve been adding new special Pre-Order Knitting Kits and Crochet Kits to our website, most of them with an expanded selection of colour combinations (by me, so they’re attractive … hopefully).

A Yarn Tasting Kit might be for you if:

  • You are thinking about making a spring/summer project (or two) and want to find a yarn that makes you happy.
  • You like swatching (some people sincerely do enjoy it, they exist, I know them).
  • You’re allergic to wool (or know someone who is) and want to try-out some alternatives (5 of the 6 yarns included in the kit are wool-free).
  • You’re stuck in a bit of a rut and you’re ready for a gentle exercise to help you moving outside of your comfort zone.
  • You like ‘NEW’.
  • You don’t like ‘NEW’, but you’re tired of being afraid of it (file this under ‘comfort zone’ above).

What you’ll get in your Yarn Tasting Kit:

  • 6 Mini balls (10-20g) of each new spring yarns (plus a few spring favorites): Summer SesameZinniaChai, Ultra Wool HandpaintMedina, and Remix Light
  • Yarn Tasting Menu
  • Berroco Spring ’21 Newsletter
  • Berroco Spring ’21 Lookbook
  • Berroco Alpaca Sticker
  • Thank you note with a 50% off pattern coupon code!

Pre-Orders

These kits are special Pre-Orders, we aren’t stocking them in the store, but – you have the option to order it any time (it will be available to purchase as long as the manufacturer makes it available to us). Your kit will ship or be available for pick-up once it arrives, and we will contact you (it may take 2 to 3 weeks for your pre-order to arrive). If you need your kit for a specific date please let us know and we can find out if it’s feasible.

New Year/New Project Game

Happy New Year! I’m sorry this is a bit belated, I’m usually a bit burned out by the time the holidays wrap up. I’m also the kind of person who likes to let things marinate for a little while before I decide where I’m at, and I feel like the turning of the calendar this year was extra meaningful.

Show & Share

Above are a couple projects I just finished, a pair of hats that were supposed to be gifts for my niece and nephew for Christmas (don’t worry, I’m a very responsible aunt, they did not suffer for a lack of gifts this year, just headwear). The pink & cyan hat is for Lucy, the blue & green is for Ben. I didn’t use a specific pattern but I put extensive details in my project notes on Ravelry, just follow the links above. The bird in the picture is a new member who joined our family in December, Gruau (it’s a french name, translating to ‘groats’, so basically ‘Oatmeal’). He’s franco-Ontarian and mostly speaks (mumbles) in french. Right now he’s living at home and isn’t in the store, but perhaps some day …

New Year/New Project Game

Based on my interactions with you guys, many of you are feeling more than just a little burned out these days. I can always gauge this by the number of people who ask me to tell them what to make. I get that, the stress of living with uncertainty doesn’t exactly stimulate the creative juices for me either. The problem for me is that I don’t have a clear-cut answer for you, you all like different things and everyone needs to grow in different ways. So, instead of giving you a project idea, I’m going to offer you a New Year’s game …

1. Decide who you will be at the end of this year. Who do you WANT to be at the end of the year? Maybe you want to be your best self, work on gratitude, or you might want more compassion and forgiveness in your life? Maybe you want to be kinder, or more loving? You might decide to chase joy (never a bad choice) and become a happier person. Growth and groundedness might appeal, or you may just want to be more connected with yourself. Self-Love could be what you desire, or grace, or an open heart. Whatever you want will be great, just choose UP. Once you ask the question meditate on it, the answer might take its time, but it will surface naturally.

2. Whatever comes out, set it as your goal. No matter how out of reach it feels, just tell yourself that you are setting this as your goal, and this is who you want to be at the end of 2021. Don’t worry about how you’ll achieve the goal, just set it. It doesn’t matter if you are the world’s biggest pessimist and you’ve decided you want to be an optimist by the end of the year, just set the goal and let it go – you have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain.

3. Choose a project that will be a gift for the person you are going to be at the end of this year. You’ll probably have to meditate on this one too. There may be lots of browsing on Ravelry (go though the projects you’ve favourited in Ravelry through the years, there are gems in there). You’re probably going to be drawn to the project but not connect entirely with it, which makes sense, you aren’t that person yet, are you? When you find it be open to it, when you second-guess yourself stop, listen to your intuition and don’t listen to your head – this is not the place for reason. The style might be different than what you usually go for, the colours might be something you’ve never related to before, it might even be something you’ve never thought you’d use – whatever it is, just lean into it. Remember, this isn’t for you, it’s a gift you are making for the person you are going to be, someone you don’t know yet, someone who doesn’t exist yet … kind of like a baby gift. (I haven’t chosen my project yet, but when I do I’ll let you know.)

4. Get the materials and cast on! Don’t bookmark and put-off your future-self. You only exist right now, but your choices in the now will shape your future. It doesn’t matter how resistant you are to your goal or your future self, just push yourself to start and get the ball rolling!

5. Swim with the current. Once you have set your goal, the resources you need to get you to your destination will find you, just be sure to take advantage of them as they cross your path. It may not be big things, but don’t pass them by. When someone mentions a book, look it up, skim it. If you hear about a podcast, check it out, see if there are any episodes that appeal to you. Accept referrals, consider advice, explore new avenues as they open up, try new things you may have passed on before. Sometimes a small thing leads to a smaller thing, then a weird thing, and then THE thing (and then twenty more small things). Trust life, let it change your perspective and let yourself grow.

By the way, unless you live on the coolest commune ever, there are going to be people in your life who are going to poo-poo your choices. Don’t pay them any mind, and lean towards the people who cheer you on. As long as you are growing towards your highest good you’re going in the right direction. You don’t get to choose the cards you’re dealt in life, but you are able to choose how you play them.

Helpful Resources for Meditating on Things

Thanks to the interweb there are many, many, many free and extremely helpful resources out there these days. There are several apps like Insight Timer, Calm and Headspace that offer both free and paid content to help you mellow-out and mull things over. You can listen to soothing meditative music on Youtube; search for Solfeggio Frequencies or Binaural Beats (if you subscribe to a music service like Spotify you can also search Solfeggio or Binaural). If you are a closet studier and book learning is your path of choice try Letting Go by David Hawkins (this is a book worth purchasing, either in paper, as an ebook or on audible. It’s always on hold at the library and it’s something you’ll want to keep on your shelf and revisit). You might also want to keep a journal. If you aren’t a paper and pen person there are lots of good Journalling Apps out there, I’ve been using the Day One app for several years, but ultimately I don’t think it matters what you choose, as long as you like how it works.

Conclusion

So, you not only have a new project on the horizon, but you now have some activities, reading material, and resources that will get you through the second half of this pandemic and help you come out better than when it started. That’s not too shabby, is it?

Hat Knit Flat & Seamed

Knitting a hat flat is a great place for very new knitters to start. The main advantage to knitting a hat flat is that they can be made on straight needles, you don’t need to knit in the round with circular and double pointed needles. The downside is that you have to sew it closed, and you’ll also have a seam up the back.

Skills

  • Cast on
  • Knit & Purl in the same row
  • Decrease stitches
  • Weaving in ends
  • Following a pattern

Hat Knit in the Round

One you start knitting hats in the round you won’t want to go back to knitting them flat. The skills are an itsy bit more advanced, but the rewards are worth it – no sewing and no seams! Hats in the round is a great next step after making scarves.

Skills

  • Cast on
  • Join stitches in the round
  • Knit & Purl in the same row
  • Decrease stitches
  • Weaving in ends
  • Following a pattern
  • Working with circular needles
  • Working with double pointed needles

UPDATE Lockdown

The province of Ontario announced new lockdown measures starting Wednesday January 13th, but right now it doesn’t seem like it’s going to create much of a problem for us. We will continue to be open for curbside pick-up, shipping, and same day delivery. Our hours will change to Monday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm, but that’s the only change we’re making right now.

We’re so grateful for your continued support, your kindness means the world to us! Every day I think about all the things I’m grateful for, and you are always in there.
