New Free Pattern – Frolic Shawl

We introduced this pattern at the DKC Knitter’s Frolic last weekend and now we are making it available for everyone! It’s a quick & satisfying little spring knit, and only uses 2 skeins of yarn: 1 Noro Taiyo and 1 Berroco Remix.

A neat bag for a Noro

This bag is a freebie from Interweave, and as soon as I saw it I knew it would look stunning made up with a Noro yarn (Silk Garden or Taiyo – both currently on sale 25% off until Dec 24th) – it reminds me a little of the Sunflower Satchel.

New Colours of Noro Taiyo!

New colours of Noro Taiyo came in this week, and they look great! This bunch is for the most part more muted. As always with Noro, you really have to come in and check out the colours for yourself, the computer monintor never does them justice, and you never know what kind of goodies are lurking at the centre of the ball.

21: Orange, Russet, Blue, Grey. It’s dark & moody like THIS
23: Blue, Turquoise, Lime, Orange. Maritime blues like THIS.
24: Blue, Green, Yellow, Burgundy. Autumnal and muted.
29: Pink, Fuschia, Purple, Orange, Brown. Warm and comforting, like THIS
30: Purple, Teal, Black, Cream.Pretty and surprising, little like THIS
31: Red, Lime, Orange, Pink. It is bright & stripy like THIS

Spring Mobius Cowl

This is an easy and satisfying project for a simple, spring cowl. It’s really a no-brainer, the yarn’s self-striping colour and soft texture do most of the work. The pattern uses a Mobius Cast On, which is easy to learn.

To learn this easy new skill you can watch Cat Bohrdi’s great Intro to Mobius Knitting tutorial on you tube. Cat’s instructions are clear and easy to follow and you’ll be an expert in no time!

NOTE: You can not substitute a normal cast on using circular needles to create a mobius – it doesn’t work. By twisting the stitches, you’ll end up with a full twist in your knitting, and you only want a half twist (the mobius).

The yarn used has a very high cotton and silk content, both of which tend to stretch and grow. If you think your cowl is too small, don’t worry, it’ll loosen up.

New Noro Taiyo!

Noro Taiyo

(100g-200m) $18.50

Ooo-oo, you are going to luuuuuv Noro Taiyo! It`s everything you always wanted Noro Silk Garden to be. Instead of Mohair it has Cotton (40% cotton, 30% silk, 15% wool, 15% nylon), which makes it soft, light, and airy – perfect for any time, but especially Springy. And of course, the price is really nice – it has double the yardage of silk garden, but costs approximately $3 less per 50g. The colours are also nice in bright, keeping up with current colour trends, and great for kids and babies! Suggested needle size is 4.5mm to 5mm, and the tension is 18 to 16 sts = 4 inches. There is only one thing to keep in mind with this yarn – if your project is fitted, make it on the small size, since both cotton and silk tend to stretch.

Noro Striping Tricks!

You can get great striping effects using Noro yarns, all you need to do is use colours of yarn and alternate every other round.

Yarn A is a Noro yarn like Silk Garden, Kureyon or Taiyo. Yarn B is a solid colour, like Cascade 220, Lamb`s Pride Worsted, or Malabrigo Worsted. For example, Turn a Square
Yarn A is one shade of Noro yarn, and Yarn B is another shade of the same Noro Yarn. For example, Noro Striped Scarf.
Use only 1 colour of Noro yarn, but Yarn A is taken from inside of skein, and Yarn B is taken from outside of skein (ie. opposite ends of the colourway). For example, this Equinox Raglan.

This is a very simply styled hat that anyone and everyone can make and wear. The 1 x 1 rib helps the hat keep it’s shape and gives it a denisity for warmth. If the ribbing seems tight, don’t worry, we are making it tight on purpose because silk has a tendency to grow. We’ve also made it in a 100% merino wool, which is great beacuse it is soft and has lots of body (it’s puffy by nature). If you would like to substitute another yarn, consider going up to a 4mm needle (or a size 0.5mm less than the median suggested size on the ballband).

New Spring Yarn: Noro Furin

Yay! A new Noro yarn for spring & summer! Furin is kind of like Noro Silk garden, except it’s a summer yarn with a base of cotton. There is a binding thread wrapped around the strand to keep the single ply of cotton in place but never fear, it’s pretty my dear! The yarn knits up fast and easily and looks great in a variety of stitches (stockingette, moss, garter, etc). I just started working on something for the store in it this weekend, more on that to follow.
