KNIT HACK & PROJECT Maeve

Maeve

Is it going to be warm? Is it going to be cold? I can’t tell anymore! I’ve been wearing shawls around the store lately, but I feel like I’d like something with a *touch* more structure, a little more style. After an exhaustive search, I’ve settled on Maeve, a shrug with a modern cable detail and little sleevettes.

The pattern calls for a worsted weight yarn, but after looking at the tension, needle size and finished projects I’d say it’s more like a DK weight like Mineville Merino DK or Cascade 220 Superwash Sport. If you want to go up to a light worsted weight yarn like Cascade 220Cascade 220 Superwash, or Malabrigo Rios, go up a needle size to a 4mm/US6 or 4.5mm/US7 needle (test your tension and see how you like the fabric). I think I just want something simple and heathered, I’ll probably just use

I like heathers and tweeds, and since my Maeve will be worn a lot I need it to wear well. I think I’ll use a basic staple yarn like Cascade 220 Heathers – sometimes it’s best to keep things simple and not overthink it. I’ll probably make a smaller size, it;s a very unstructured garment and the dimensions of this type of style are generous.

Mini Knit Hack

Sometimes I like the feel of a yarn once the project has been blocked, but not so much in the skein when it’s straight off the shelf.  If you don’t love the feel of your yarn in the skein, you can soften it up by washing it before you start knitting.

  • If your yarn is not already in a skein wind it up around the backs of a couple of chairs,  or on a  swift (if you have one).
  • With scrap yarn, secure the skeins in at least 4 sections (to keep the yarn from getting tangled while being washed).
  • Wash skeined yarn in Eucalan no-rinse delicate wash (it is very easy, see instructions on the bottle/youtube/their website). Add a quarter cup of white vinegar to the water to stabilize the colour.
  • Hang yarn to dry.
  • Wind yarn into balls or cakes.

FREEBIE Sideways Cable Hat

Sideways Cable Hat

I think this hat is super cute and super clever – it’s knit sideways and then joined up the side. I think it would look amazing in a semi-solid colourway of Mineville Merino DK, or Cascade 220 Sport Superwash.

If you are intrepid try using a provisional cast on and then invisibly join the two sides using  kitchener stitch. If not, that’s ok too – for a nice, easy seam just use a provisional cast on (it’s just casting on with scrap yarn, not hard), and do a three needle bind off to finish. If all of this sounds too daunting to deal with, just cast on normally and seam using mattress stitch.

FREEBIE Duotone Cowl

Duotone Cowl

I’m currently knitting a tubular cowl and I’ve gotta say, it’s pretty breezy knitting (I actually worked on it at the movies last week, and I’ve been teaching myself how to knit continental with it). When you work in stocking stitch in the round (like the Duotone Cowl) you only need to knit, no purling is necessary. Even better, the knitting is almost continuous (except for changing colours), you just go round and round and round. It makes for some very easy, mindless knitting. When making a tubular scarf the fabric will be two ply, so you can knit on a larger needle and at looser than normal tension, otherwise the scarf will be a bit too stiff and thick.

Mineville Merino DK would make a gorgeous Duotone Cowl, I’d use either two different semi-sold colours or a single variegated/multi-colour (get 2 skeins). For a slightly more traditional/conservative look use super soft merino Cascade 220 Sport Superwash in their lovely heathered colours.

Mineville Merino DK: 2 skeins (1 in each of two colours)

Cascade 220 Sport Superwash: 4 skeins (2 in each of two colours)

Mineville Wool Project Merino DK (3103) is soft, machine washable, easy to work with, easy to wear, and subs easily for other DK weight yarns (Debbie Bliss Rialto, Madeline Tosh DK, etc). It comes in a generous 100g/200m skein, which is enough to make an adult hat or pair of mitts (you’ll need two for a scarf or Honey Cowl, and about 6 for a women’s size medium sweater – check your pattern for full yardage requirements). The hand-painted colours are vivd, saturated and GORGEOUS. Plus, it’s extremely affordably and competitively priced for a super soft, machine washable, hand dyed merino wool (it costs about the same price or less than a commercially machine dyed merino wool).

Mineville Wool Project is a new “off-brand” brand from the sisters at Fleece Artist and Handmaiden. The prices are excellent because we purchase the yarn in one-time only lots. This means that once it’s gone, it’s GONE, so be sure to order enough for your project, because we may never be able to get this base again.

FREEBIE & RESTOCKED! Mineville Merino DK

Mineville Merino DK BLOG

It’s Back! Emily from The Mineville Wool Project somehow got her hands on more of the Merino DK base, and we immediately jumped on it! The first shipment just came in (yes, I double indulged) and is live in our online store and on the shelves in person. The price is a bit higher, but it’s still rediculously reasonable for a luscious, beautifully hand-dyed merino yarn (it’s about the same price as the Cascade 220 Superwash Sport). By the way, the older colours for our first batch were on sale, so we’ve left them that way.

FREEBIE Cabled Cushion Cover

Cabled Cushion Cover

Not everyone is a garment knitter, especially in warm weather, but never fear, inspiration still abounds!  Summer is a great time to slow down and fluff up your nest. Great cushions are hard to find, but are easy to make.  I love cables, they’re classic, never dated, and  go with EVERYTHING.

Pillow covers also offer a great opportunity to play around with cables without committing to a large garment. The project is just enough knitting, finishing is minimal, fit isn’t an issue, and you can use any number of different yarns. The classic kettle dyed Malabrigo Merino Worsted  would be scrumptious, as would it’s machine washable cousin Malabrigo Rios. If you want machine washability Berroco Vintage is a cost effective choice, or for a cotton try Cascade Avalon. For something more textured and interesting consider Mineville Wool Angora (hold 2 strands together), Noro Silk Garden Solo (it’s on Clearance), or tweedy Queensland Kathmandu Aran. Whatever you choose I don’t think you can go wrong.

Finished Project: Pisti Mobius

Finally, a finished project! You aren’t alone,  we occasionally hit road-blocks and ruts too.

Mineville Angora Wool pisti mobius

Pisti Mobius

The thing about spring is you still need outerwear, but you can’t bear to look at your winter duds another minute. Something fresh is in order for the season of renewal, and we thought something light, airy, and colourful was in order. Only one skein of Mineville Angora Wool was needed to make this voluminous cowl, we added an extra pattern round, and we still had 20g of yarn left! The pattern uses a special Mobius Cast-On, it isn’t hard and you can use a free video tutorial  to learn it (see below). The pattern is free, and very simple (I apply the K.I.S.S. principle to stuff like this).

Mineville Angora Wool

This yarn is simply awesome! It’s soft, has a bit of a halo, and at 480m (525 yds) per skein it runs more than TWICE as long as similar DK weight yarns (an average size sweater can be made with 2.5 skeins – that’s pretty affordable, especially since our prices are in Canadian dollars). It can be knit as a Sport weight/DK weight yarn, or finer if you like. The angora makes it light, airy and fluffy, but there is not enough in the mix to shed all over your clothes are make their way up your nose (I know you hate that, so do I). Dyed in stunning semi-solid colourways, it’ll knit up beautifully as sweaters, wraps, scarves, cowls, or anything else you can dream up. We’re making a Pisti Mobius with one skein, and you can check out other people’s finished projects on Ravelry.
