TANK Construction Zone

Construction Zone

This minimalist top is all about the shoulder details and the big gauge fabric. It has a simple boxy shape and is slightly cropped, and knits up in no time! Quince & Co Kestrel is machine washable and softens to a delicious drape after a wash & dry (just put it in a delicates bag to keep it safe). Linen is very stretchy, consider if making a size smaller is right for you.

FREEBIE Tulip Tank

Tulip Tank Top

Another elegant freebie from those clever girls at Purl Soho! Tulip is a simple tank that crosses over in the back, creating a clever design detail with little effort. The project involves a few short rows, so it isn’t for the absolute beginner, but an advanced beginner or intermediate knitter should be ok.

It calls for Louet Euroflax Sport, but you could also go a notch more luxe with Quince & Co Sparrow, or shift down to silky soft and budget friendly Cascade Ultra Pima.

Size

  • Finished Chest Circumference: 31 (35, 39, 43, 47) inches
  • Length from Shoulder to Bottom Edge: 22 ½ (23, 23 ½, 24, 24 ½) inches
  • Length from Underarm to Bottom Edge: 14 inches
  • Ease: This garment is designed with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease (it’s supposed to be worn loose)

FREEBIE Mistral

Mistral 1

Mistral

Simple, interesting, light and airy, this summer sweater has it all. It’s a perfect cover-up in warm weather or layer it for effect. The fit is oversized and summer yarns tend to have a lot of drape and stretch, so check the measurements – you might want to make a smaller size than normal. Plus, dropped stitches are easy and make for fast knitting. Silky, soft and very affordable Cascade Ultra Pima would make for a great sweater, or for more texture and tactile interest try a linen like Louet Euroflax Sport or satin smooth Quince & Co Sparrow.

Sizes

Finished Bust: 39½(42½, 45 3/4, 49½, 54 1/4, 59)inches  or  100(108, 116, 126, 138, 150)cm

Full length:  21¼(22, 22¾, 23 5/8, 24 3/8, 25¼) inches  or  54(56, 58, 60, 62, 64)cm

Yarn Options

You can use any of the following yarns ….

Cascade Ultra Pima: 5(5, 6, 6, 7, 7) skeins

Louet Euroflax Sport: 4(4, 5, 5, 6, 6) skeins

PROJECT Davis

Davis

Davis is a ‘make ‘n wear’ type of garment, a quick and simple spring & summer top. Plain old stocking stitch is easy on the brain and looks great in Quince & Co Kestrel. The edges don’t roll and the drape is to die for. Davis is wider than most with very fitted sleeves to balance its boxy shape. An exposed shoulder seam makes for a great little detail. The sizing is quite roomy and linen has a lot of drape, so you can get away with making a smaller size.

Notes

Davis is knitted in the round from the bottom up. The shoulders are shaped with short rows and joined using a three-needle bind off. The sleeve stitches are picked up and knitted in the round.

Size

Finished Bust: 41½ (44¾, 48, 51¼, 54½, 57½, 60¾)inches or  105.5 (113.5, 122, 130, 138.5, 146, 154.5) cm

FREEBIE Buttercup

Buttercup

Buttercup is an oldie but a goodie. It would look amazing made with cost effective Cascade Ultra Pima, or you can go a bit more luxe and Quince & Co Sparrow or Louet Euroflax Sport. The recommended needle size is just a suggestion, you have to swatch first to get your gauge. Also, to get a gauge with linen always wash and dry first (machine wash in a delicates bag, dry until partially dry and lay flat).

One of the nice things about patterns that have been around a few years is they’ve been test driven and the wrinkles completely ironed out. You can also browse through all the other projects on Ravelry and see how it worked out for other people, what it looks like in different colours and yarns. You can also look at helpful notes that other people have written about their projects, which is especially useful is you plan to make modifications.

Notes

  • Cottons and linen yarns have a lot of stretch and ease when knit up.
  • Designed with a bit of positive ease.
  • Worked from the top-down.
  • Machine wash & dry linen swatches to get a proper gauge

Size

33(36, 40, 43, 47, 51) inches or 83(90, 100, 108, 118, 128)cm

PROJECT Daicey

Daicey

I really love Daicey. I love it’s simplicity, I love it’s easy elegance, and I especailly love that it knits up fast and in one piece! I also feel like it’s a good project for someone who has never worked with linen. The yarn,  Quince & Co Kestrel, is easy to work with, washes beautifully.

Notes

Linen is very stretchy, especially when knitted at a loose tension – consider going down a size.

Wash in the machine in a delicates bag. Machine dry in delicates bag until damp and lay flat to finish drying. (To be honest, I put it in for the whole cycle, the most important part is the delicates bag – you don’t want your hand knits accidentally abrading with garments in the wash)

Size

Finished Bust: 31½ (34¾, 37¼, 39½, 41¾, 45¼, 48½, 52)” or 80 (88.5, 94.5, 100.5, 106, 115, 123, 132) cm

Materials

  • Quince & Co Kestrel 8 (8, 9, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) skeins
  • 6.5mm/US10.5 – 16″ circular needles
  • 6.5mm/US10.5 – 29″ circular needles
  • 6.5mm/US10.5 double pointed needles
  • Pattern via Ravelry

PROJECT Le Petit Sac

Le Petit Sac

I love little bags, they make a quick little project and are infinitely useful. This little bag by mega-designer Pam Allen has great texture and really explores the tactile qualities of the yarn,Quince & Co Sparrow. It’s a great excuse to play around with the nicest linen EVER.

Plus, I don’t think you have to be an especially skilled sewer *if* you want to line it – it’s just a few straight seams. It would be easy to hand stitch a lining, or you could probably even get away with using fabric glue.

Notes

Bag is knitted flat, then folded in half and seamed. Edging is picked up from top edge and worked in the round. Strap is worked separately, then sewn to bag.

For a similar bag pattern that’s FREE see the Drops Bag with Lace Pattern. Want something larger? Try the FREE Summer Fling bag, or the Dejeuner Bag, both of which use Quince & Co Sparrow.

Skills

Provisional cast on (link provided), twisted stitches, working in the round, picking up stitches, seaming.

PROJECT Slope

Slope

I love the gentle slope and elegant drape of this tank! It looks so loose and cool, and I think it would be divine made with Quince & Co Sparrow soft & smooth linen. For a budget-friendly option you can substitute silky smooth Cascade Ultra Pima Fine (only $5.97 per skein).  Both yarns are machine washable – just wash on delicate with cold water in a delicates bag.

Notes

When working with linen be sure to swatch first and wash your swatch to get accurate tension.

Yarn Options

Quince & Co Sparrow: for short version 4(4, 4, 5, 5) skeins,  or for long version 4(4, 5, 5, 6) skeins.

FREEBIE Caramel Cardie

Caramel

I’ve been eyeballing this cardi-wrap for years, but I wasn’t convinced until I saw it worked up in a drapey yarn (see the pics above by miastick). It’s such a simple, comfy summer knit! I tihnk it would be perfect made with Louet Euroflax Sport, but you can also sub silky & soft Cascade Ultra Pima or Cascade Ultra Pima Paints for a more wallet-happy version. I also thought it would be perfect for Spring, Fall, or chilly offices all year round, made with the very economical Mineville Wool Project Angora Wool.

Notes

Keep in mind that cotton and linen make stretchy textiles, so consider making a size smaller if you are using them.
