FREEBIE Norse Scarf/Wrap

norse-scarf-1

Norse Scarf

This oversized, cosy and cocooning accessory features beautiful texture and cable detail. It’s knit in chunky weight yarn, try Malabrigo Mecha, Berroco Vintage Chunky, or Cascade Eco.

Size

Completed scarf measures 51.5cm/20.5″ wide and 220cm/86.5″ long

Optional Modifications

Note the size of this ‘scarf’ is LARGE – it’s 20.5″/51.5cm wide (a standard scarf is usually about 6″/15cm wide and 72″/180cm long). If you want to make yours smaller or larger (to make it as a wrap) you can alter the width in increments of the pattern repeat: 14 stitches at the cast-on (before the transitional increase on R8) or 19 stitches in cable pattern (after the increase on R8). 19 stitches in the cable patterns should equal approximately 4″/10cm”:

  • Cast on 105 sts = approx 28.5″/57cm wide (6 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 91 sts =approx 24.5″/61cm wide (5 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 77 sts = approx 20.5″/51.5cm wide (4 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 63 sts =approx 16.5″/41cm wide (3 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 49 sts = approx 12.5″/31cm wide (2 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 35 sts = approx 8.5″/21cm wide (1 pattern repeat)

Each pattern repeat represents about 19% of the total amount of yarn required (about 228m/250yds).

Yarn Options

Amounts are based on the optional modifications above. The largest quantity is for the original size written in the pattern.

1(2, 3, 4) pattern repeats:

Malabrigo Mecha: 5(7, 9, 10) skeins

FREEBIE & RESTOCKED! Mineville Merino DK

Mineville Merino DK BLOG

It’s Back! Emily from The Mineville Wool Project somehow got her hands on more of the Merino DK base, and we immediately jumped on it! The first shipment just came in (yes, I double indulged) and is live in our online store and on the shelves in person. The price is a bit higher, but it’s still rediculously reasonable for a luscious, beautifully hand-dyed merino yarn (it’s about the same price as the Cascade 220 Superwash Sport). By the way, the older colours for our first batch were on sale, so we’ve left them that way.

mineville-merino-dk-combo

Mineville Wool Project Merino DK (3103) is soft, machine washable, easy to work with, easy to wear, and subs easily for other DK weight yarns (Debbie Bliss Rialto, Madeline Tosh DK, etc). It comes in a generous 100g/200m skein, which is enough to make an adult hat or pair of mitts (you’ll need two for a scarf or Honey Cowl, and about 6 for a women’s size medium sweater – check your pattern for full yardage requirements). The hand-painted colours are vivd, saturated and GORGEOUS.

Mineville Wool Project is a new “off-brand” brand from the sisters at Fleece Artist and Handmaiden. The prices are excellent because we purchase the yarn in one-time only lots. This means that once it’s gone, it’s GONE, so be sure to order enough for your project.

  • 100% Superwash Merino Wool
  • DK weight
  • 100g/200m
  • 4mm/US6 needles
  • 22 sts = 4″/10cm
  • Machine Washable

Use Cascade Lana Grande for a simple, classic look (it’s very affordable too), or try hand-painted Malabrigo Rasta for a fantastic multicolour.

Tweedy Fog

Tweedy Fog

Tweedy Fog is a classic raglan top down open front cardigan with a generous rib collar and twisted stitch elbow patches. If your elbows wear out way faster than the rest of the sweater, it also has elbow patches! The simple and classic silhouette is perfect for heathered yarns but will look equally great in solids.

The cardi is totally seamless and works up quickly due to its simplicity. It calls for cheap & cheerful Cascade 220 Heathers or Cascade 220 Solids – YAY! We also have some Cascade 220 On SALE – double YAY!

And, if you are careful about weaving in ends, and use a reversible entrelac pick up method when working on the collar, this cardigan becomes reversible. The cardi in the picture has the purled side as the right side, but you are free to wear it on the knit side.

Size

  • Finished bust: 33 (35, 38, 40, 42, 45) inches
  • To fit bust: 31 (33, 36, 38, 40, 43) inches

FREEBIE Laurel

laurel-3

Laurel

A big, cozy, go anywhere cardigan – can we ever get enough? (it’s a rhetorical question, the answer is NEVER). I’m pretty sure that as soon as I saw this new freebie the pleasure centres of my mind lit up. It’s got an interesting construction, it’s knit from side to side – I don’t think it’s crazy hard but check out the pattern for more details to see if it’s for you. The designer advises you choose your size based on how you like your arms to fit, then other measurements can be adjusted to your taste. It looks like it’s roomy, so you can size down if you want a slimmer fit.

You’ve got lots of yarn options, but I think something simple like Cascade 220 Heathers would look terrific and let the texture sing. The loftiness of Malabrigo Merino Worsted would also be pretty, as wouldthe hand dyed Malabrigo Rios. If you need something affordable, washable and soft, try Berroco Vintage, the heathered colours are sensational.

FREEBIE Denizen

denizen-1

Denizen

This little number caught my attention immediately – how could you not fall for a FREE pattern for a super pretty little fall poncho? Plus, it’s knit up in buttery Malabrigo Merino Worsted. The yarn is a single ply and very flexible in terms of tension, and the designer has taken advantage of this and used a larger than normal needle – so it should knit up faster than expected – YAY!

Channel Cardigan

Channel Cardigan

I love the classic styling of this cardie: the cables, the shape, it’s just so cozy and timeless. If you’re looking for a little challenge in your fall project definitely take a look at this one. It’s the kind of sweater I endlessly wear around the house with my yoga pants. If  I could find it in a store I would buy it, but since I can’t I guess I’ll just have to make one. The only question is which colour?  … a knitter’s life is an embarrassment of riches.
