FREEBIE & KNIT HACK & Restocked Fleece Artist Merino 2/6

fleece-artist-merino-26-instagram

Fleece Artist Merino 2/6 is a soft, 100% Merino wool hand-dyed fingering weight yarn from Canada. It makes beautiful socks and shawls, or any other kind of project you can think of!

No two skeins are exactly alike, so if you are working on a project that uses more than one skein we suggest you work with 2 skeins and alternate strands every other row to assure an even distribution of colour. Colours tend to be variegated or semi solid.

If you are having a hard time with the colours in a hand-painted or variegated yarn pooling you can try changing up your pattern in a few ways:

  • Garter Stitch:  the colour distribution of variegated yarns tends to be great in garter.
  • 1 x 1 Rib:  a K1P1 rib tends to compress the textile and change the colour distribution.
  • Needle Size: change your tension by going up or down a needle size, sometimes as little as half a millimetre can make a big difference.

Armande

Although this cardigan has a classic look, its seamless construction is thoroughly modern. The body is knit from the bottom up with the pocket linings joined as you go. Collar stitches are put on hold at the top of the fronts, and the shoulders are joined using a three needle bind off. The collar stitches are then removed from the holders and additional stitches are picked up to create the perfect face framing collar. Next, stitches are picked up around the arms, and sleeves are knit from the top down, using short rows to shape the cap. It’s best worn with 0-2 inches of negative ease.

RAYNE

Nor Silk Garden Rayne 1

Nor Silk Garden Rayne 2.png

Rayne

I ofter refer clients who are looking for a simple, cozy little cardi-wrap to Rayne. It’s a simple, effective knit for newbies and experienced knitters alike. We knit up our sample a couple years ago, but I realized that we were so busy that I never got a chance to blog it! So here it is, our overlooked Rayne, made with Noro Silk Garden.

We made the second size and the fit is generous because the fabric is knit at a looser gauge and has a lot of give (it fits me comfortably: 36″ bust, Old Navy size 4/small).

Noro Silk Garden is a perennial favourite – it’s a self-striping, long colourway with subtle colour gradations that always keep you interested. The texture is also equally enchanting – it’s a single ply with a little bit of halo. I think colours 437 & 436 would make a gorgeous Noro Striped Scarf!

Mrs Garter

Mrs Garter

I really like Mrs Garter sweater for fall. It’s a very versatile little jacket knit from the top-down in the round, which means minimal finishing – yay! The design is interesting enough to turn heads, but simple enough that you’ll actually be able to get through it and actually wear it *this* fall. The pattern also comes with both a short and long version, and instructions for both asymmetrical and symmetrical fronts.

I also love the arms – they’re designed using the contiguous method, so you can have set-in style sleeves without all the drama of setting them in and seaming them. (Don’t worry, contiguous isn’t hard, it’s similar to top-down raglan). Why is a set-in sleeve desirable? Because EVERYONE looks good in a set-in sleeve. Raglans look amazing on people with big shoulders and small busts, but they don’t do much for people like me with small shoulders and a bust. So when I see a pattern with a contiguous sleeve, I get excited.

The pattern calls for an Aran weight yarn, like Cascade Eco, which will knit to a dense-ish tension on the prescribed 4.5mm/US7 needles (great for a jacket, gives it some structure). If you want something more pliable and sweater-like consider a worsted weight yarn like Cascade 220 or Cascade 220 Superwash.

FREEBIE Buttoned Wrap

I Want That Wrap

If you’re one of those people who isn’t into knitting summer projects you might want to skip ahead to fall … and I love this simple wrap for fall! It’s an easy knit for both beginners experienced knitters alike.

Additionally, the materials aren’t complicated and don’t have to be pricey:  3 skeins of affordable Cascade 220 Heathers gets the job done (get a 4th skein if you want to make yours larger). For something fancier in a hand-painted yarn try Malabrigo Rios, or for a tweedy texture try Noro Silk Garden Solo (it’s on sale too!). I’m also inclined to suggest Mineville Angora Wool which knits up with such a gorgeous halo and light drape.

The fabric is purposefully knitted looser than normal, with a relaxed stitch, giving the fabric drape and movement.

Size

21″ X 62″(unfolded)

Yarn Suggestions

Cascade 220 Heathers: 3 skeins

Malabrigo Rios: 3 skeins

Noro Silk Garden Solo SALE! : 6 skeins (use 6mm/US10 needles)

Malabrigo Rasta is a super thick, super soft single ply yarn made from 100% Merino Wool. One luxurious skein is enough for a hat, mitts, or a close neck-warmer/cowl (try our Free Bulky Mobius Cowl pattern for some instant gratification).
  • 100% Merino Wool
  • 150g/82m (90 yds)
  • Super Bulky Weight
  • 10mm to 15mm (Us15 to 19) needles
  • 8 to 10 sts = 4″ (10cm)
  • Single Ply, Slightly felted
  • Hand wash, lay flat to dry

Malabrigo Chunky is one of our favourite yarns of all time. It’s soft as a baby’s bum and knits up beautifully on any needle between 6mm to 8mm (US 10 to 11). The colour is a gorgeous hand dye and comes in both semi-solids and variegated colourways. No two skeins are exactly the same, so if you are using more than 1 skein for your project you should would with 2 skeins at at time and alternate every other row to ensure an even colour distribution.
  • 100% Merino Wool
  • 100g/95m (104yds)
  • Bulky Weight
  • 6mm to 8mm/US10 to 11 needles
  • 14 sts = 4″/10cm
  • Made in Uruguay
  • Hand wash, lay flat to dry

Malabrigo Mecha is a yummy-scrummy skein of wonder! It’s a single ply, 100% extra fine superwash merino wool, which translates to soft as and squishy baby’s bottom. It knits at a variable gauge, a chunky to bulky weight, and is very flexible since the yarn tends to bloom. The yardage is generous at 120 metres (130 yards), and of course you can actually use it for babies and kids since it’s machine washable.
  • 100% Superwash Merino Wool
  • 100g/120m (130yds)
  • Chunky to Bulky Weight
  • 6 to 8mm/US 10 to 11 needles
  • Made in Uruguay
  • Machine Wash, lay flat to dry

Cascade Eco is a great staple yarn. It knits up beautifully on 6mm/US10 needles (although you can use up to 8mm/US11 for a cardigan like Iced by Carol Feller). It’s very affordable and comes in extra-large, 250g skeins, making it extremely popular for blankets, sweaters and felted slippers. One skein in enough to make a scarf/infinity scarf. On the softness scale, it’s somewhere around an 8/10 – not as soft as a Merino, Alpaca or Cashmere, but pretty good as far as wool goes.
  • 100% Peruvian Highland Wool
  • 250g/437m (478yds)
  • 5.5mm to 6mm (US 9 to 10) needles
  • 14 to 16 sts = 4″ (10cm)
  • Hand wash in cold with Eucalan or Soak, lay flat to dry.
  • Made in Peru
  • Project Ideas from Ravelry

Cascade Magnum is a super fluffy, soft, single ply yarn. It works up super quick on big needles (we like 12 to 15mm/US17 to 19) and makes for a very satisfying knit. It’s great for last minute gifts, especially hats and cowls.
  • 100% Peruvian Highland Wool
  • 250g/112m (123yds)
