PROJECT Satawal Top

Satawal

Satawal is a cropped tee with a simple lace pattern around a boat neck, which looks a bit like a Macramé texture. You can use various weights of yarn, from fingering weight for airy and transparent texture to worsted weight yarn for mid season garment (we used Berroco Modern Cotton on 6mm/US10 needles).

Our Project

We made the second size (size small) with 2 skeins of Berroco Modern Cotton in colour 1648 Abbot Run). It measures approximately 20″ wide (40″ bust circumference) and 20″ tall from top of shoulder to hem (you can of course make it longer if you want to). If you feel like the neck is too wide you can always seam it and make it a closer neck. The fabric has a lot of stretch, and at this tension you’ll probably want to wear it over a light camisole. It’s meant to be worn loose and oversized, with lots of ease!

Modern Cotton is a soft, easy to knit, and very machine washable blend of cotton and Modal Rayon (which is viscose, a plant based cellulose fibre, much like bamboo). It’s easy to wear in warmer weather, and it’s also great for people with allergies to wool or other animal fibres, or who knit vegan.

Many thanks to Erica for whipping up this beautiful top!!! And many thanks to Gru for sitting for photos without having to be bribed or making a mess.

Construction

The pattern is worked seamlessly from the top down. The lace pattern for the yoke is worked in the round with increases at the both right and left shoulders, then the body is divided into the front and the back and worked flat separately to the underarm, where they are joined again. The lower body is knitted in one piece in the round. Sleeve stitches are picked up along armholes and worked in the round.

HOURS & PROJECTS Canadian Thanksgiving

Pumpkin Beanie … by Knit-O-Matic!

Store Hours For Canadian Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving comes a bit earlier north of the 44th parallel in Canada, it has something to do with our harvest being earlier, therefore we we dine earlier. We are open regular store hours (12 to 6 pm) on Saturday & Sunday, and closed on Monday. Have a great weekend, wherever you are!

Saturday October 7: 12 to 6 pm

Sunday October 8: 12 to 6 pm

Monday October 9: CLOSED

Some Cieslak for the Weekend

Never wanting to leave you without some inspiration, here are a couple of pullovers by designer Jacqueline Cieslak. I love that Jacqueline’s designs are size inclusive, but I love even more that her designs LOOK GREAT on different sized women. Her casual little tops are always just right for people, no matter what shape they may be. Wear them over a dress or a loose shirt, it’s all beautiful! Plus, they aren’t immense projects, so they won’t break the bank, and you’ll actually wear it (an important factor to my mind). they’re pretty, and I think its good to make yourself feel beautiful on the outside, because you are beautiful on the inside.

Bay Pullover

The Bay Pullover is your dream all-weather sweatshirt, whether you’re getting cozy at home or being tousled by a crisp ocean breeze. This relaxed fit pullover features dolman sleeves, uninterrupted stockinette on the front and back panels, and decorative 3-needle bind offs, making for a simple, seamless knit with a clean, modern look. The pattern includes 9 sizes, 6 original video tutorials, technical illustrations for understanding the unique construction, and detailed guidance for choosing your size and adjusting the sleeves.

Size

Because of the dolman sleeves and relaxed fit, BAY works with an extremely wide range of positive ease (anything from 6-20”/15-50cm). If you prefer more drape or a more oversized fit, feel free to size up! In the photos, Jacqui is wearing a size 7 (62”/155cm). Her bust circumference is 54”/135cm, her waist circumference is 49”/122.5cm, and her bicep circumference is 20”/50cm.

  • Finished Bust Circumference: In inches: (38, 42, 46) [50, 54, 58] {62, 66, 70} inches or (95, 105, 115) [125, 135, 145] {155, 165, 175} cm
  • To choose your size, measure the circumference of your torso around the fullest part of your bust/chest and add at least 6”/15cm.
  • To see how BAY looks across the size range with varying amounts of ease, check out the test knitting round up here!

Yarn Options

Because the recommended yarn is a silk/linen blend, both of which are fibres that stretch and have a lot of drape, I recommend using something that also has some stretch. Superwash yarns, blends with cotton, linen, wool, silk, or alpaca tend to be good at this.

STRIPE-SPIRATION

Stripe Hype Sweater

The Stripe Hype Sweater is a great stash busting project where you can use up scrap yarns or combine your favourite colors in just the way you want. Also, knitting stripes makes this one a really quick project to complete because the curiosity of seeing how every next stripe will affect the overall look is highly addictive, and a lot of fun.The work begins by working the back flat, then stitches are picked up for the left and right front separately and worked flat. The back and front are then joined together and the body is worked in the round. Stitches are picked up for the sleeves and worked in the round and lastly stitches are picked up around the neckline and the collar is worked in a twisted rib stitch.

Size

  • XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)
  • Finished bust circumference: 90 (106, 116, 126, 136) (146, 156, 168, 178) cm / 35.5 (41.75, 45.75, 49.5, 53.5) (57.5, 61.5, 66, 70)”.
  • Length from back neck (excluding collar) to hem: 59 cm / 23.25” all sizes.
  • Sweater is designed to have 20-30 cm / 8-12” of positive ease. Choose a size that is 20-30 cm / 8-12” bigger than your bust circumference for a relaxed and slightly oversized look.
  • Sample in size M, model has a bust of approx. 87 cm / 34.25” and is 171 cm/ 5’6” tall.
  • If you’re between two sizes, I recommend choosing the bigger size.

Stripe Hype Dress

The Stripe Hype dress is a relaxed dress that is the absolute perfect “just-throw-it-on” garment for any season. The dress has a dropped shoulder and a boxy fit which makes it modern and easy to knit.

You can customize it to your exact preferences by choosing your favourite colours: go all in and use multiple colours for a really fun and playful vibe (a great option for using up scrap yarns in your stash), or choose just a few colours in a more toned down colour palette for a more classical look. You can also knit it all in one colour.

Try Berroco Modern Cotton DK, Berroco Remix Light or Berroco Vivo for a lighter spring/summer dress. For something a bit warmer try Sandnes Garn Double Sunday or Berroco Vintage DK for the fall or winter. See below for amounts required.

Construction

The dress is worked top down. The work begins by working the back flat, then stitches are picked up for the left and right front separately and worked flat. The back and front are then joined together and the body is worked in the round while increasing stitches along both side seams around the waist and hips for a slight A-line shape. Stitches are picked up for the sleeves and worked in the round and lastly stitches are picked up around the neckline and the collar is worked in a rib stitch.

SUMMER Knit Tops

Satawal

Satawal is cropped tee with lace pattern around the boat neck, which looks a bit like Macramé texture. You can use various weights of yarn, from fingering weight for airy and transparent texture to worsted weight yarn for mid season garment (I think Berroco Modern Cotton would be perfect).

The pattern is worked seamlessly from the top down. Lace pattern for yoke is worked in the round with increases at the both right and left shoulders, then the body is divided into the front and the back and worked flat separately to the underarm, where they are joined again. Materials

Audrey Top

The Audrey Top is worked bottom-up. The body is worked in the round in stockinette stitch, then the work is divided for front and back, and each section is worked back and forth in stockinette stitch with decreases along the sides. The straps are worked as an i-cord. The pattern calls for a tension is 20 sts, perfect for a soft, silky summer cotton blend like Berroco Modern Cotton.

Size

  • XXS (XS) S (M) L (XL) 2XL (3XL) 4XL (5XL)
  • Bust circumference: 80 (85) 90 (95) 100 (110) 120 (130) 140 (150) cm [31½ (33½) 35½ (37½) 39½ (43¼) 47¼ (51¼) 55 (59) inches]

  • designed to have approx. 0-5 cm [0-2 inches] of positive ease, meaning it is designed to be approx. 0-5 cm [0-2 inches] larger in circumference than your bust measurement. Measure yourself before beginning your project, to determine which size will fit you the best. For example, if you measure 89 cm [35 inches] around your bust (or around the widest part of your upper body) you should knit a size S. A size S top has a bust circumference of 90 cm 35½ inches which in the given example would give you 1 cm ½ inch of positive ease.
  • The model in the photos is wearing a size XXS and has a bust circumference of 78 cm [30¾ inches] and is 164 cm [approx. 5 feet 4 inches] tall.
  • The top in the photo has 2 cm ¾ inch of positive ease.

Havin

Havin was originally designed without sleeves, as a slip over … just a great companion for those lovely summer nights. While working on the second sample, the designer thought she would like to try out short sleeves … and yay! it worked well and she really liked the look. This little success was leading to her third sample and LONG sleeves all in one. Havin will make a beautiful summer top, a super cute tee or a cool pullover … a pattern to use all year round.

Berroco Modern Cotton DK or Berroco Remix Light would be perfect for a simple summer top (sleeveless, long or short sleeves). Sandnes Garn Double Sunday, a yarn so popular with the simple constructions of Petite Knit, would be perfect for a top for cooler weather. See below for recommended yardage amounts.

Construction

Havin is worked seamlessly from the top down. Firstly, increases are worked on both RS and WS rows to the final shoulder width. Then both the front and the back are worked (separately) flat to underarm. At underarm both front and back are joined to work the tapered body top down in the round to the bottom. There are two finishing options (ribbing or I-Cord) for the body to choose from. Optional short or long sleeves can be worked by picking up stitches around the arm opening and working them top down in rounds. Optional neck finishing is worked last.

Size

  • 1 (2, 3, 4, 5)(6, 7, 8, 9)
  • Finished bust circumference: 44 (47.25, 50, 53, 55.25)(58, 61, 64, 67)” or 111 (118, 125.5, 133, 138)(145.5, 153, 160, 167.25) cm
  • Suggested ease: 7 – 13” (18 – 33 cm)

Yarn Options

Berroco Modern Cotton DK – Sleeveless version: 3(3, 3, 4, 4) (4, 4, 5, 5) skeins, Short sleeve version: 3 (3, 4, 4, 4)(4, 5, 5, 6) skeins, Long sleeve version: 4 (4, 4, 5, 5)(5, 5, 6, 6) skeins.

PROJECTS 4 Summer Tops for NOW

Soho Top

Soho Top is a classic sleeveless summer top with a boatneck style neckline. It is constructed from the top down giving it an advantage for adjusting the length of the body. Simple garter stitch is used throughout the pattern. It is worked flat and in the round. Neckline, waist and armhole openings are framed with an i-cord edging and body features decorative “seams” on both sides. Soho Top is meant to be worn with 0 to 7 cm (0” to 3”) of positive ease.

Look At My Holes

I love holes, I love mesh, I love me some BIG lace!

#LookAtMyHoles is a top down, seamless raglan crop top with a simple lace repeat creating large holes all around the garment. The combination of large needles and the lace motif make this an incredibly low yardage pattern. Perfect for layering, this top is designed to be worn with coordinating tank top, #AsFriendsTank by Jessie Mae Martinson. Look at My Holes also looks cool on its own, but for the full effect of the #LookAtMyHolesAsFriendsSet you need to make both!

Ship Shape

I love Ship Shape , it’s such a perfect spring/summer knit. The navy stripes are classic, and the neck-line and shoulder detail are simple and elegant. I have a friend who says navy blue is a neutral, but I think that’s bull. Navy is just unassuming, it’s a spy embedded in colour society, it lives under the radar.

Ship Shape is knit seamlessly, top down, beginning with 2 separate pieces for the shoulder gussets. The yoke is a drop shoulder / raglan hybrid, making it perfect for playing with stripes, self striping yarn, or colour blocking! Body and sleeves are knit in the round.

Sagebrush Tank Top

Simple, stylish and modern, the Sagebrush Tank Top is perfect for summer! This easy ribbed tank top features a flattering round neck and comes in cropped and normal length. This summer crochet top will be a staple piece in your handmade wardrobe with its incredible drape and a knit-like look. The Sagebrush Tank Top is so versatile and quick to make, you’ll want one in every colour!

The crochet tank top only uses back-loop half double crochets and slip stitches and is made up of 2 identical pieces (the front and back are the same) that are worked lengthways, so the foundation chain runs the length of the top not the width.

NEW Berroco Modern Cotton

Berroco Modern Cotton

Berrooc Modern Cotton is a super soft and slightly silky yarn that’s perfect for spring and summer projects. It’s a machine-washable blend of pillowy Pima cotton and silky Modal viscose/rayon, which also makes it a perfect choice for people sensitive to animal fibres and vegans. Modal is a sustainable cellulosic fibre sourced from plants (like bamboo or Lyocell), and is a bit cooler to the touch than plain cotton (a good thing if you tend to run warm, or live in a warm climate).

Modern Cotton is a Worsted weight yarn, meaning it works up on 4.5mm/US7 knitting needles or a 5mm/H crochet hook, and you can substitute it in patterns that call for a similar weight yarn.

Modern Cotton is perfect for both crochet and knitting and is great for sweaters, tanks, tees and other tops, hats (especially chemo hats), bags, shawls & wraps, blankets & afghans, and slippers

Red Bud Isle

Red Bud Isle is a pretty summer tank with a nifty cross-over in the back. The Tank is worked from the bottom front hem upwards, increasing along edges of the back body and adding a single stripe near the hem and a set of stripes at the chest. Stitches are then cast off to separate into front and back strap sections. Front body is finished first and each strap is turned into an i-cord. Back body pieces overlap and strap stitches pick up stitches to join together back body pieces to create the fixed overlap. The final stitches are worked into i-cord for each strap.

Admit by Norah Gaughan

I admit, I love Norah Gaughan … her designs always engage me, they’re creative, sometimes architectural, but always different from everything else out there. Simple eyelets make a basic top both pretty and a teensy bit avant-garde. This top will be extra flattering on anyone with smaller shoulders. Plus, this particular pattern is FREE!

  • Finished Bust: 36(40-44-48-52)”
  • Length: 22(22-22½-22½-24)”
  • Designed with approximately 6” of ease.

Chickadee Cardigan

Misha and Puff don’t have a large repertoire of patterns, but their classic, vintage-inspired knits are simple, beautiful and fun. This easy, open little cardie is a versatile layering piece for warmer weather. Seamless, top-down construction and a hint of texture at the yoke make it a fun and satisfying knit. This classic cardigan construction is certain to be a go-to favourite. There is also a pattern for a matching Bonnet.

Modern Stripes Baby Blankets

This simply styled FREEBIE baby blanket combines bands of colour and texture in a modern ‘sampler’. It’s available in a knit (right) as well as a crochet (left) version.

Throw Blanket

To make a larger blanket you just need to add more stitches:

  • CROCHET: The pattern stitch is a two-stitch repeat so you can change the stitch count at the beginning by a multiple of two stitches and the pattern will still come out right.
  • KNIT: The pattern is a multiple of 4 plus 2 stitches, so ass stitches in a multiple of 4 to make your blanket bigger.
  • For a full throw size (Crochet: 62.5″, Knit: 61″) buy twice as much yarn and start with Knit: 278 sts, or Crochet: 224 chain.

Size

  • Crochet version: Finished size 31.3/4” x 42”
  • Knit version: 30 1/2″ x 42″

Materials: KNIT

Materials: CROCHET

Cloverleaf Eyelet Blanket

There is something very beautiful and special about this vintage-inspired baby blanket … I may be sentimental because it resembles the blanket my great-grandmother made for me. I think a fabric this simple and pretty requires a fibre with a little bit of a fancier aesthetic, like Berroco Modern Cotton (or a merino like Cascade 220 Superwash Merino). The trefoil border is a simple corchet stcrochet stitch, and the pattern comes with free youtube videos.

The pattern is FREE on the designer’s blog, you can sign up for her newsletter and get a copy for free, or you can pay to download a PDF . There are also instruction on how to Resize a Knit Blanket, Throw or Washcloth.

VIDEO TUTORIAL ‘Oh the Places You’ll Go’ Crochet Blanket

I’ve been working on an “Oh the Places You’ll Go” Blanket and I made up a simple hack to make the increases and rounds look beautiful and seamless! In the video I show you how to make the blanket from the start … and there’s a special treat at the end!

Yarn

I’m using 6 colours of Amano Yarns Chaski – the yarn is lovely but it’s fingering weight and taking FOREVER to finish. I highly suggest using a thicker yarn than I did, the pattern uses a Worsted weight yarn and I recommend Berroco Modern Cotton (for a baby blanket you’ll need 1 skein of each of 6 colours, for a throw you’ll need two skeins of each colour, for something even larger try three skeins of each colour, and you may want/need an extra skein of yellow, that’s the colour I used the most of/ran out of first):
