Summer Knitting: Explore the Ranunculus Pullover

A person wearing a light-colored knitted top with a lace pattern at the neckline, paired with a flowy yellow skirt featuring white floral designs.

Ranunculus

Ranunculus is a great summer knit! It’s made with needles that are a bit larger than the yarn, so it’s a nice, light, open weave. Sandnes Garn Line is the perfect summer yarn, it’s soft, light, washable, and has a little texture to keep things interesting. You can make it with long or short sleeves, whatever makes you happy!

CONSTRUCTION

Ranunculus is a top-down round yoke pullover with lace and textured stitches. The yoke pattern is designed to look like wearing layers of a necklace. Short rows are added between neck ribbing and yoke pattern not only on the back bit also on the front, so that the neckline has a bit of a boat neck shape and the yoke pattern has a necklace look. The round yoke has ample depth, and the finished pullover has cropped length so that you can lay it over dresses or high-waisted skirts and pants. If crops aren’t your style, please adjust the body to your favorite length. You can choose from a smaller or wider neckline, and short sleeves or long puff sleeves with/without a diagonal cuff line.

Bea Top Pattern: Easy Boatneck Tank

A woman standing on a street, wearing a brown sleeveless top and blue wide-legged jeans, holding a woven bag and a denim jacket.

Bea Top

The Bea Top by PetiteKnit is a great simple, summer tank! I love that it has minimal finishing and simple, clean edges. Make it with Sandes Garn Line or Sandnes Garn Tynn Line (two strands together for the latter to get a marled look). This is a great project for newer knitters, since boat-necks require very little shaping.

Construction

The Bea Top is worked from the bottom up. The body is worked in the round in stockinette stitch, and the work is then divided into the front and back yoke which are each worked separately back and forth in stockinette stitch with decreases along both sides. The top is shaped at the top of the yoke by means of short rows to create the boatneck.

Knit a swatch to determine which needle size gives you the correct gauge. Make sure to wash your swatch before taking the gauge measurements, as the recommended yarns might grow with wash and wear. Note that the size of the top will increase by a couple of cm an inch or so with wear after wash and blocking – keep this in mind when choosing which size to knit.

Size guide
The Bea Top is designed to have approx. 8 cm [3¼ inches] of negative ease, meaning it is designed to be approx. 8 cm [3¼ inches] smaller in circumference than your bust measurement. The sizes XXS (XS) S (M) L (XL) 2XL (3XL) 4XL (5XL) are designed to fit a bust circumference of 75-80 (80-85) 85-90 (90-95) 95-100 (100-110) 110-120 (120-130) 130-140 (140-150) cm [29½-31½ (31½-33½) 33½-35½ (35½-37½) 37½-39½ (39½-43¼) 43¼-47¼ (47¼-51¼) 51¼-55 (55-59) inches]. The measurements for the finished top can be found on the front page of the pattern (please note that these measurements only apply if the correct gauge is maintained throughout). Measure yourself before beginning your project to determine which size will fit you the best. For example, if you measure 90 cm [35½ inches] around your bust (or around the widest part of your upper body), you should knit a size S. A top in size S has a bust circumference of 82 cm [32¼ inches] which in the given example would give you 8 cm [3¼ inches] of negative ease.

Ankler’s Summer Shirt

Anker’s Summer Shirt is a simple summer top, worked in one piece from the top down. The yoke is worked in sections of rib with increases in the round, followed by classic raglan increases when the stockinette stitch section begins. The sleeves are worked at the end, either on double-pointed needles or on circular needles using the Magic Loop technique. Anker’s Summer Shirt has no finishing other than weaving in ends.

Before beginning your project, measure yourself with a measuring tape around your bust (or your widest upper body part) to determine which size will fit you the best. For example, if you measure 95 cm [37½ inches] you should knit a size M. A size M shirt has a finished circumference of 96 cm [37¾ inches], which in the given example would mean 1 cm [½ inches] of positive ease.

Needles & Etc

Because there are several needles length required, this project is a good candidate for Interchangeable knitting needles. Also, if you aren’t great with double pointed needles you can substitute Chiaogoo 12″ circular needles or Addi Easy Knit 10″ needles.

SABAI Top Knitting Pattern | Ideal for Beginners | Knit with Sandes Garn Line

A woman is wearing a sleeveless, rust-colored top paired with white pants. She has one hand on her hip and is posing against a plain wall.

Sabai

The SABAI top is a light and airy summer top with a boat neckline. It’s super easy to knit, requires only a few techniques and is therefore ideal for beginners. You can make it with the ribbed collar or just stocking stitch for a simpler rolled edge. I recommend using a DK weight cotton blend like Sandnes Garn Line, for a light, cool, easily washable summer knit.

Two knitted garments laid flat, one in a burnt orange color and the other in a light beige, positioned on a white jacket.

Construction

The SABAI top is worked seamlessly top down. First, the neckline border is worked in the round in a 1/1 rib stitch pattern and increases are worked for the slanted shoulders. For the armholes, front and back parts are worked separately back and forth. The stitches of front and back are then joined and worked in the round again. The top ends with a narrow ribbed border with a rolled edge. As the top is knitted from the top down, it is possible (and advisable) to try it on while knitting so that the length can be individually adjusted.

Techniques used: left- and right-leaning knitted and purled increases.

  • The top can be worn snug with approx. 0 – 2 cm / 0 – 0.8” positive ease, but also works well with a little more room to move (5 – 8 cm / 2 – 3.2” positive ease). For example, if you have a chest circumference of 90 cm / 35.4”, you should choose between size S and M.

Beginner-Friendly Plain Yoke Tee Knitting Pattern

A person wearing a light beige knitted short-sleeve top, paired with beige linen trousers, standing against a neutral background.

Plain Yoke Tee 20

The Plain Yoke Tee 20 is a very simple tee in stockinette stitch. If you are a newer sweater knitter, you can optionally skip the short rows on the yoke, so you only have to knit in the round. Then follow the pattern for the novice version, which is knitted exclusively with knit stitches. The Detailed Edition includes short rows on the yoke, knitted after the neckline, but beside that, the two versions are the same.

A woman wearing a light beige knitted top with a round neckline and short sleeves, paired with high-waisted, loose-fitting cream-colored trousers. The background is plain white.

Size

The Plain Yoke Tee 20 is intended to have a positive ease of approx. 8-14 cm 3-5.5”, depending on how loosely fitting you want it to be. It is shown here with a positive ease of 14 cm 5.5“.
Find your personal bust circumference by measuring around your chest (or the widest part of your upper body). Then look at the measurements given at the beginning of the pattern (these are the finished measurements of the Tee). Positive ease is the difference between your personal measurement and the Tee measurement. For example, if your bust circumference is 94 cm 37”, a size M would provide you with a positive ease of 10 cm 4”m – 94 cm = 10 cm). 41” – 37” = 4”

Olga Sweater Knitting Pattern: Perfect for All Seasons

A young woman standing on a street, wearing a black and white striped sweater, blue jeans, and brown sandals. She is holding a brown bag and a book, with a sunny day and buildings in the background.

Olga Sweater

So, how about a classic sweater you can make for warmer or cooler weather? You can make The Olga Sweater in Sandnes Garn Double Sunday, a merino wool for cooler days, or get into the spring of things with an all-season yarn like Sandnes Garn Line.

A person viewed from the back wearing a striped sweater in navy and cream colors, with their hair styled in a loose bun. They are standing on a cobblestone street, surrounded by bicycles and greenery.

Description

The Olga Sweater is worked from the top down in stockinette stitch with stripes. First, the back yoke is worked back and forth with the slope of the shoulders being shaped using short rows and in stripes, which are worked at the same time. Each shoulder is then worked back and forth on a circular needle, and then the shoulders are joined to form the front yoke. The front and back yoke are joined at the underarms to form the body, which is worked in the round on a circular needle with stripes. The sleeves are worked down from stitches that are picked up and knitted around the armholes. At the end, a folded neck edge is worked from stitches that are picked up and knitted along the neckline.

Size guide
The Olga Sweater is designed to have approx. 23 cm [9 inches] of positive ease in the smaller sizes and then gradually less positive ease in the larger sizes. The sizes XXS (XS) S (M) L (XL) 2XL (3XL) 4XL (5XL) are designed to fit a bust circumference of 75-80 (80-85) 85-90 (90-95) 95-100 (100-110) 110-120 (120-130) 130-140 (140-150) cm [29½-31½ (31½-33½) 33½-35½ (35½-37½) 37½-39½ (39½-43¼) 43¼-47¼ (47¼-51¼) 51¼-55 (55-59) inches]. The measurements for the finished sweater are listed on the front page of the pattern. Please note that these measurements are only achieved if the correct gauge is maintained throughout. Measure yourself before starting your project, to determine which size will fit you the best. For example, if you measure 95 cm [37½ inches] around your bust (or around the widest part of your upper body) you should knit a size M. A size M sweater has a bust circumference of 118 cm [46½ inches] which in the given example would give you 23 cm [9 inches] of positive ease.

Needles

Because there are so many sizes required, we recommend interchangeable needles for this project. 40cm/16″ needles require the shorter 3.5″/4″ tips, and the longer needle lengths will use 4.5″/5″ tips. You can purchase individual tips and cords from KnitPro, or invest in a set from either KnitPro or Chiaogoo.

  • Circular needles: 4 mm [US6] / 40, 60 and 80 and/or 100 cm [16, 24 and 32 and/or 40 inches] circular needles

Easy Summer Knits: Tip Top Tank & Ankler’s Summer Shirt

A pink knitted tank top with a deep V neckline and wide straps, hanging on a wooden hanger against a light background.

Tip Top Tank

This FREE tank top is designed to be an easy summer knit, and is the perfect simple project for warmer weather. The deep V neck is flattering to wear without being too revealing, and the straps are wide enough to hide your bra straps (hello practical!). Throw it on with shorts or a breezy skirt on a hot day, pair it with jeans in Autumn, or even make up a woolly version to wear as a vest over shirts in the cooler months.

The pattern includes instructions to knit it flat on straight needles, as well as in the round on circulars (woohoo no seams!). And with clear and simple instructions, both options would be suitable for first-time garment knitters who have tackled the basics of knitting and purling, and are up for learning some fun new techniques! The body is knit from the bottom up, and the length is easily customizable with suggestions for a cute crop as well as a longer version, making it a fantastic wardrobe staple.

Ankler’s Summer Shirt

I figured we can all use something to look forward to, and the seasons’ changing is one of those things you can always bank on (at least in Canada – we have A LOT of weather).

Size

  • XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL
  • To fit a bust circumference of 80-85 (85-90) 90-95 (95-100) 100-110 (110-120) 120-130 cm [31½-33½ (33½-35½) 35½-37½ (37½-39¼) 39¼-43¼ (43¼-47¼) 47¼-51¼ inches].
  • Total length: 52 (54) 56 (60) 62 (62) 64 cm [20½ (21¼) 22 (23½) 24½ (24½) 25¼ inches]
  • Sleeve length: 9 (9) 10 (10) 10 (10) 10 cm [3½ (3½) 4 (4) 4 (4) 4 inches]
  • Ease: The shirt is designed to have approx. 0-5 cm – [0-2 inches] – of positive ease, meaning it is designed to be 0-5 cm – [0-2 inches] larger in circumference than your widest upper body measurement.
  • Measurements: The measurements for the finished garment are on the front page of the pattern (note that these measurements are only achieved if the correct gauge is kept).

Yarn Options

Anker’s Summer Shirt is make with a Double Knitting weight yarn, and any of the following are all great choices, depending on what kind of garment you want.

Needles & Etc

Because there are several needles length required, this project is a good candidate for Interchangeable knitting needles. Also, if you aren’t great with double pointed needles you can substitute Chiaogoo 12″ circular needles or Addi Easy Knit 10″ needles.
