Simple Ribbed Hat

We got this beautiful new yarn (Manos Alegria Grande) in the store recently and I was kind of itching to get my needles into it … so I did! And I made a hat!  I made a Simple Ribbed Hat, which is an old pattern of ours that I just revised while working on the hat.

I chose a 1×1 rib because the dense rib tends to mitigate any potential colour pooling in hand-dyed yarns. It also makes a nice, warm hat, especially when worn with the brim turned up. I think it’ll make a great gift, especially with the holiday season creeping up.

Manos del Urugay Alegria Grande is a sumptuously soft superwash yarn that’s great for EVERYTHING (except felting). Made with 75% merino wool & 25% polyamide, it’s strong enough for boot socks, and soft enough for baby hats.

Manos Alegria FADE

Accidental Fade

One of the things I really like about working in the store is interacting with people. I learn a lot from my customers, I enjoy their different perspectives, it opens my mind and stretches me. There is an infinite diversity in people’s colour preferences, and while I’m pretty good at combining colours, their choices are sometimes things that I didn’t see or wouldn’t think of.

The yarn above is one of those instances. I was taking pictures of new colours of Manos Alegria that had just come in, and afterwards, put the skeins on our table before putting them away. A client (Deborah) popped in and said: “Oh, is that a fade?” And there is was, right under my nose, a great combination for a Find Your Fade wrap!

If you troll Ravelry regularly you might have seen this one, but I think it is a great project. It’s made with fingering weight yarn on 3.5mm/US4 needles, making it a light, easy knit to wear. The basic construction keeps things elegant but simple for summer knitting. The subtle curve at the bottom is created with short rows – a mini-skill challenge for beginners. NEW YARN ALERT: Manos del Uruguay Alergria Sock

Alergria means ‘Joy’ in spanish, and we don’t disagree – Manos Del Uruguay Alergria is a great new sock yarn!  It is super soft, which is really nice is a sock yarn that is 75% superwash merino wool and 25% polyamide. Each skein is hand dyed, no two are exactly alike. The yardage is good at 425m/100g, and it knits on 2.25 to 3mm needles. machine or hand wash cool, lay flat to dry. The price aint bad either at a very reasonable $21.97 per skein. 

Manos Del Uruguay is a non-profit organization which assembles women in cooperatives scattered throughout Uruguay to bring economic and social opportunities to rural women.

Get it while it lasts! Uruguay isn’t a busy international shipping destination, so it takes a while to get inventory onto a boat and out of the country. 

New Neon Manos Maxima!


Squeeee!  The yarn I’ve been waiting for finally arrived – Manos Del Uruguay Maxima Semi Solids in NEON colours! Now, if you you don’t want to wake you up before you go-go, I understand, but listen to me now and believe me later – a little bit of highlighter colour, while not for the faint of heart, rocks.  

Manos Del Uruguay Maxima  is 100% fair trade, kettle dyed, extra fine merino wool.  100g/ 200m. 18 to 20 sts = 4″ on 4mm to 5mm needles. $19.97/skein.


The good people at Purl Bee get it. The people on the Pinterest interweb get it too. The key to working the new new neon, is use is small doses, and pair it with a neutral (off white, grey, camel).
