FREEBIE Norse Scarf/Wrap

norse-scarf-1

Norse Scarf

This oversized, cosy and cocooning accessory features beautiful texture and cable detail. It’s knit in chunky weight yarn, try Malabrigo MechaBerroco Vintage Chunky, or Cascade Eco.

Size

Completed scarf measures 51.5cm/20.5″ wide and 220cm/86.5″ long

Optional Modifications

Note the size of this ‘scarf’ is LARGE – it’s 20.5″/51.5cm wide (a standard scarf is usually about 6″/15cm wide and 72″/180cm long). If you want to make yours smaller or larger (to make it as a wrap) you can alter the width in increments of the pattern repeat: 14 stitches at the cast-on (before the transitional increase on R8) or 19 stitches in cable pattern (after the increase on R8). 19 stitches in the cable patterns should equal approximately 4″/10cm”:

  • Cast on 105 sts = approx 28.5″/57cm wide (6 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 91 sts =approx 24.5″/61cm wide (5 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 77 sts = approx 20.5″/51.5cm wide (4 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 63 sts =approx 16.5″/41cm wide (3 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 49 sts = approx 12.5″/31cm wide (2 pattern repeats)
  • Cast on 35 sts = approx 8.5″/21cm wide (1 pattern repeat)

Each pattern repeat represents about 19% of the total amount of yarn required (about 228m/250yds).

Yarn Options

Amounts are based on the optional modifications above. The largest quantity is for the original size written in the pattern.

1(2, 3, 4) pattern repeats:

Malabrigo Mecha: 5(7, 9, 10) skeins

Berroco Vintage Chunky: 4(6, 8, 10) skeins

Cascade Eco: 2(2, 3, 3) skeins

FREEBIE & NEW Noro Kureopatora

Noro Kureopatora DISPLAY BLOG

kureopatora colours aug 2016

Noro Kureopatora

Noro Kureopatora is a one of Noro’s softest and most versatile yarns, and we’ve restocked it for fall! Made from a blend of different types of wool,  this single ply yarn looks great knit, crochet, or felted. One skein goes a long way -each carries a generous yardage of 270m/276 yards, and it blooms, so you can use a variety of needle sizes with it (two skeins are more than enough for a scarf). We made Lala’s Simple Shawl with 3 skeins and a Noro Striped Scarf with 2 skeins.

  • 100% Merino Blend Wool
  • 100g/270m (276 yds)
  • 4.5mm needles
  • 20 sts & 26 rows = 4″ (10cm)
  • Worsted Weight
  • Made in Japan

Finished Cable Cowl FREE Pattern

Rowan Cocoon cable braid cowl 5

Cable Cowl

Finally finished AND photographed – our Cable Cowl made with Rowan Cocoon and it worked out beautifully! The yarn has a lot of air in it and spreads out beautifully on the larger needles. Plus, the finished product has a light, plush halo effect. Definitely giftable.

We used two skeins and followed the pattern, but I think it would work out nicely if it was 5 inches longer (you’ll need an extra skein, we used all of the yarn). It would also be cool if it was wider! If you plan to seam or graft the ends together you probably won’t need an extra skein.

The pattern does not include instructions for making button holes, but I’m not really a fan of them anyway (they always get stretched out). We sewed on some snaps and then sewed the buttons on on top.

New Store Project: Groovy in Noro SGSS

I just finished blocking our Groovy made with Noro Silk Garden Sock Solo.  The yarn is deceptively puffy, and we accidentally used the wrong needle size (3.5mm/US4) and it came out a bit too tight for my liking. You can go up a size or two, to 3.75mm or 4mm needles (US5 or 6) and it’ll worked great!  The pattern was simple, not at all complex, well written and easy to follow. You can make your wrap/scarf deeper without doing math. The yarn is pretty, slightly tweedy, a slightly textured single ply. I tried blocking with both Soak and Eucalan and preferrred the Eucalan for this yarn – it makes it soft and pouffs it up. The garment is very flexible, it can be worn as a scarf, wrap or shawl, a great accessory for any wardrobe!

Crochet Day! FREE Augusta Shawl

Photos: Fairmount Fibers
A simple something, light and easy for spring and summer. Use a light cotton like Cascade Ultra Pima Fine, which is easy to wear all year round, and crochet’s like a dream, and won’t break the bank. I think this pattern would also look amazing made with Freia Ombre Lace with it’s gradual colour shift, or Schoppel Crazy Zauberball

Summer Knit-Spiration: Creekbed Scarf

I think this little free pattern is a hidden gem and a great opportunity to play around with self striping yarns. It’s knit with light, sock weight yarn, which make for easygoing summer projects. It’s also light on the cerebral side, with just enough interest to keep you from nodding off in the heat. Add a colourful, self striping yarn like a Noro and it’ll be easy entertainment. It’s also a grab and go project, easy to travel with (even if you aren’t going any further than your porch).

I love kristenlynnea’s version (above) made with Noro Silk Garden Sock and other scraps. It also looks great in CompulsiveKnitter’s version made with Schoppel-Wolle Zauberball.

Suggested Yarns

I think I would make a few stylistic modifications to the pattern:
  1. If using a striping yarn I’d drop the big centre band, I don’t think it would do anything for the design.
  2. If I was making the 2 border bands in a contrast colour I would make it a neutral (grey or brown) with a low to medium contrast to the main colours. A high contrast is too much for my delicate sensibilities (ie. no likey black).
  3. If using Schoppel-Wolle Zauberball I’d skip the border colour all together and let the yarn do all the work.
  4. If using Noro Silk Garden Sock I’d choose 2 colourways and alternate every other row. Alternately, you can use 2 skeins of the same colourway and start the first from the inside and the second from the outside, and alternate every other row.
