FREEBIE + HACKS Paloma Cowl

BLISSPATSFPALOMACOWL.zoom.1.jpg

Paloma Cowl

I like simple, loose cables like this cowl; they create great texture and interest without too much effort.

Yarn Options: Super Bulky (10 to 12mm needles)

Yarn Options: Bulky (8mm needles)

HACKS

  • Because all of the yarns we’ve suggested (above) bloom beautifully, you can try pushing your needle size up to a 12mm/US17 and omit a ball of yarn.
  • The yarn suggested in the pattern is super-bulky, so expect your cowl to be too. If this is too much for you, consider substituting a slightly thinner, bulky weight yarn, and smaller (8mm/US11) needles. If this seems too narrow, add a second cable pattern repeat.
  • The pattern is knit flat and seamed in a circle, but if you want to do something more knitterly like a 3 needle bind-off or kitchener stitch, you can cast on using a provisional cast-on (casting on with scrap yarn).

FREEBIE & FINISHED Honey Cowl

Homey Cowl 1

Honey Cowl

I’m sorry you haven’t heard from us lately, we’ve been really busy merchandising all the new stock that’s been arriving for fall! You’ve probably been doing more knitting than I have, but Liane finished this Honey Cowl last week.

It’s a super simple knit, easy to make, great to wear (or gift), the pattern is free, and there are almost 24,000 projects for it in Ravelry! We made ours with one skein of Wollmeise DK (currently on SALE), but you can use 200g of any Worsted weight or DK weight yarn. My only suggestion is do not use a yarn that is very fluffy or textured, you’ll lose the beautiful stitch definition. Solid colours, heathered colours, semi-solid hand paints, variegated and self-striping colours all seem to look great with this pattern!

Materials

  • FREE Pattern
  • Worsted weight or DK weight yarn: about 200g for long version, 100g for short version
  • 5mm/US8 – 36″ circular needles for long version or 24″ circular needles for short version
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry/darning needle

FREEBIE Yellow Brick Cold

Yellow Brick Cold

A client walked in today wearing this cowl and it looked SO GOOD, I had to share! Hers was very similar to the original in the picture, it was a similar solid coloured yellow, but I think it was knitted on smaller needles. She also had a couple of big round buttons are the join – it was a nice little decorative accent. The pattern was written with simple, affordable Berroco Vintage, but you can make it with any kind of worsted weight yarn (see options below).  One caveat: you might want to use different size needles for the different stitches, the garter stitch might require a smaller needle than the basket weave stitch – play around and see what you like.

Yarn Options

Materials

  • FREE Pattern
  • 8mm/US 11 needles (or smaller, check your tension)
  • tapestry/darning needle

Lava Flow Cowl

Lava Flow Cowl

We finished this cool accessory a few weeks ago, but unfortunately the holiday season always keeps us super busy. The design is so cool, the technique that makes the waves is really interesting, a fun new skill to add to your box of tricks. We used two skeins of Malabrigo Merino Worsted (ON SALE!) and 5.5mm/US9 needles. The the closure is a removable/reusable JUL Designs Leather Pedestal Button (size medium), you can see all our JUL closures HERE. (The grey sweater coat is something cool I picked up at Winners many years ag0 – sorry, there is no pattern available).

FREEBIE Bulky Mobius Cowl

Bulky Mobius Cowl

Our Bulky Mobius Cowl is a great little last minute gift. It works up fast on 10mm/US15 needles and the mobius technique makes it entertaining. The yarn, Malabrigo Rasta, is stunning: it’s buttery soft and I’ve never seen a skein that didn’t knit up like a Monet painting. Plus, it’s a one-skein project!

Materials

FREEBIE Varduz Cowl

Varduz Cowl

Quick & impressive, this cute little cowl only uses one skein of scrumptious Malabrigo Mecha, and works up fast on 8mm/US11 needles.

If you are intrepid try using a provisional cast on and then invisibly join the two sides using  kitchener stitch. If not, that’s ok too – for a nice, easy seam just use a provisional cast on (it’s just casting on with scrap yarn, not hard), and do a three needle bind off to finish. If all of this sounds too daunting to deal with, just cast on normally and seam using mattress stitch.

FREEBIE Willow

willow-scarf-4

Willow

I love it when things come together fast and easily, and this scarf was one of them. The pattern looks complicated but it was an extremely simple cable stitch. I was playing around with a new yarn, buttery soft Cascade Spuntaneous. I wanted to see how it would knit up in different ways, so I pushed it to it’s limit and used 12mm/US17 needles for the body of the scarf. It looks awesome and blocked larger than it knit up, which was beneficial because it was looking a bit on the short & stout side when it came off the needles.

The Closure

The cool thingy on the scarf in the first picture is the JUL Designs Mod Loop Leather Closure in Truffle. All of the JUL designs products are kind of like ingenious jewellery for your knits. They  screw in, so they are no-sew and you can remove them and use them as often and with as many garments as you like (you can see a video demonstrating how they work HERE). Of course, you do not need to wear this scarf with a closure, I just thought it looked neat and tried it.

willow-scarf-5

Size

After blocking the scarf measured approximately 11″ wide and 62″ long.

Notes

  • used 12mm/US17 needles for the body of the scarf
  • added 5 rows of K2P2 rib on each end with 10mm/US15 needles
  • wet blocked the scarf by washing it in Soak Wash, removing the excess water by rolling it in a towel, and then laying flat to dry
  • if you want a narrower scarf or want to use less yarn there’s definitely room to omit one pattern repeat (6 stitches)
  • if you want to join the ends and make a cowl you can cast on using a provisional cast on and then either graft the ends together using kitchener stitch or use a 3 needle bind off to join the ends.

FREEBIE Duotone Cowl

Duotone Cowl

I’m currently knitting a tubular cowl and I’ve gotta say, it’s pretty breezy knitting (I actually worked on it at the movies last week, and I’ve been teaching myself how to knit continental with it). When you work in stocking stitch in the round (like the Duotone Cowl) you only need to knit, no purling is necessary. Even better, the knitting is almost continuous (except for changing colours), you just go round and round and round. It makes for some very easy, mindless knitting. When making a tubular scarf the fabric will be two ply, so you can knit on a larger needle and at looser than normal tension, otherwise the scarf will be a bit too stiff and thick.

Mineville Merino DK would make a gorgeous Duotone Cowl, I’d use either two different semi-sold colours or a single variegated/multi-colour (get 2 skeins). For a slightly more traditional/conservative look use super soft merino Cascade 220 Sport Superwash in their lovely heathered colours.

Yarn Options

Mineville Merino DK: 2 skeins (1 in each of two colours)

Cascade 220 Sport Superwash: 4 skeins (2 in each of two colours)

Other Materials

  • FREE Pattern
  • 5mm/US8 or 4.5mm/US7 – 16″ circular needles (one or two sizes larger than the yarn calls for)
  • stitch marker
  • tapestry or darning needle
  • scrap yarn
  • spare circular needle
