FREEBIE & RESTOCKED! Mineville Merino DK

Mineville Merino DK BLOG

It’s Back! Emily from The Mineville Wool Project somehow got her hands on more of the Merino DK base, and we immediately jumped on it! The first shipment just came in (yes, I double indulged) and is live in our online store and on the shelves in person. The price is a bit higher, but it’s still rediculously reasonable for a luscious, beautifully hand-dyed merino yarn (it’s about the same price as the Cascade 220 Superwash Sport). By the way, the older colours for our first batch were on sale, so we’ve left them that way.

mineville-merino-dk-combo

Mineville Wool Project Merino DK (3103) is soft, machine washable, easy to work with, easy to wear, and subs easily for other DK weight yarns (Debbie Bliss Rialto, Madeline Tosh DK, etc). It comes in a generous 100g/200m skein, which is enough to make an adult hat or pair of mitts (you’ll need two for a scarf or Honey Cowl, and about 6 for a women’s size medium sweater – check your pattern for full yardage requirements). The hand-painted colours are vivd, saturated and GORGEOUS.

Mineville Wool Project is a new “off-brand” brand from the sisters at Fleece Artist and Handmaiden. The prices are excellent because we purchase the yarn in one-time only lots. This means that once it’s gone, it’s GONE, so be sure to order enough for your project.

Noro Silk Garden is a perennial favourite – it’s a self-striping, long colourway with subtle colour gradations that always keep you interested. The texture is also equally enchanting – it’s a single ply with a little bit of halo. I think colours 437 & 436 would make a gorgeous Noro Striped Scarf!

Finished Project: Pisti Mobius

Finally, a finished project! You aren’t alone,  we occasionally hit road-blocks and ruts too.

Mineville Angora Wool pisti mobius

Pisti Mobius

The thing about spring is you still need outerwear, but you can’t bear to look at your winter duds another minute. Something fresh is in order for the season of renewal, and we thought something light, airy, and colourful was in order. Only one skein of Mineville Angora Wool was needed to make this voluminous cowl, we added an extra pattern round, and we still had 20g of yarn left! The pattern uses a special Mobius Cast-On, it isn’t hard and you can use a free video tutorial  to learn it (see below). The pattern is free, and very simple (I apply the K.I.S.S. principle to stuff like this).

Finished Cable Cowl FREE Pattern

Rowan Cocoon cable braid cowl 5

Cable Cowl

Finally finished AND photographed – our Cable Cowl made with Rowan Cocoon and it worked out beautifully! The yarn has a lot of air in it and spreads out beautifully on the larger needles. Plus, the finished product has a light, plush halo effect. Definitely giftable.

We used two skeins and followed the pattern, but I think it would work out nicely if it was 5 inches longer (you’ll need an extra skein, we used all of the yarn). It would also be cool if it was wider! If you plan to seam or graft the ends together you probably won’t need an extra skein.

The pattern does not include instructions for making button holes, but I’m not really a fan of them anyway (they always get stretched out). We sewed on some snaps and then sewed the buttons on on top.

New Store Projects: One Skein Cowls

I’m sorry it’s taken so long to show off the store knits, we’ve been up to our ears in work (ie. yarn) and haven’t had a chance to breathe, let alone take pictures and publish them.

People often ask me what is my favourite project to knit, and from the samples below it appears to be cowls, mostly because they are a fun way to see how a yarn knits up. Behold, a selection of One Skein Cowls – all freebies, all pretty simple.

Bulky Mobius Cowl

Malabrigo Rasta always surprises me. The colourways always knits up lighter, brighter, and prettier than they look in the skein.

I kinds really love this new yarn, Berroco Borealis Tweed. It is of course soft and very scarf worthy. In the skein the texture looks very consistent, but knit up it has a bit of a mind of it’s own (although far from a slubby yarn). It knitted up BEAUTIFULLY, the colour distribution is nice, and the colours really pop. It seems to do well in simple stitches, like a K2P2 rib, stocking stitch, brioche stitch, etc. It’s definitely design-worthy (ie. I have a hankering to design with it).

Like it’s cousin, above, Berroco Borealis is soft, has great colour, and knits up beautifully. I don’t think the welts in the Easy Mobius Cowl show it off to it’s best effect, simple stitches seem to be key (see note above).

This is the second season we’ve carried Malabrigo Mecha, I was already familiar with it, but clearly not familiar enough because it looks AMAZING worked up in the  Easy Mobius Cowl. Who knew? And like it’s cousin Rasta, above,  the colourways always knit up lighter, brighter, and prettier than they look in the skein.

Yup, Malabrigo Mecha definitely rocks the Mobius.

Good old Malabrigo Chunky, you get the job done every time! Is there anything you can’t do?

Spring … Grignasco Sahara 25% Off

Grignasco Sahara

Grignasco Sahara looks lovely, it’s easy + feels great to knit with, and it looks amazing knitted up. Sahara is a soft, luscious fibre blend for Spring + Summer: 20% silk, 40% bamboo, 40% linen. It has a lovely semi-matte sheen and uneven texture that gives it a very modern, very urban texture. It’s also discounted (Squee!) because it has been discontinued (Boooo-urns!).

The Deets

  • 50g-100m
  • 4.5 to 5mm needles
  • 18 sts + 24R = 4″/10cm
  • 20% silk, 40% bamboo, 40% linen
  • Hand wash in cold water, lay flat to dry
  • Made in Italy
  • SALE $7.50 (regularly $10)

Dropped Stitch Spring Cowl

This project is my favourite combination of simple, fast, easy, and deceptively impressive looking. For a snug fit cast on 75 to 80 sts, for something longer that can be wrapped twice cast on 140 to 150 sts (you’ll need 4 balls).

Notes
Initially we started making the Easy 1-Ball Cowl pattern (much cred to the designer!) but made changes to make the most of this very pretty yarn and to make it easy for you to make one too.
