Hudson Bay Inspired Baby Blanket

I love the simplicity of this blanket, for either a baby, throw, or a bedspread – plus it’s a super simple project for beginners.  There is a great tutorial on weaving in ends on garter stitch HERE.

We recommend using a basic, superwash Peruvian wool yarn like Cascade 220 Superwash,  or if you want something a bit fancier, we like the super soft, plush and machine washable, hand dyed merino Malabrigo Rios – both are available in our bricks & mortar and online store.

Yarn Options

  • Cascade 220 Superwash: 6 ball 817 Aran, and 1 of each: 1950 Hunter Green, 877 Golden, 893 Ruby, 885 In the Navy (or for a slightly brighter palette try 864 Christmas Green, 821 Daffodil, 809 Really Red, and 885 In the Navy)
  • Malabrigo Rios: 6 skeins 063 Natural, and 1 skein of each: 033 Cereza, 096 Sunset, 128 Fresco Y Seco, 150 Azul Profundo.
  • Berroco Vintage: 6 skeins 5101 Mochi, and 1 of each: 5151 Cardinal, 5121 Sunny, 5152 Mistletoe, 5143 Dark Denim.
  • Cascade Avalon: 6 skeins 01 White or 30 Ecru, and 1 skein of each: 38 Deep Blue, 04 Crimson, 10 Artisan’s Gold, 13 Treetop.

Holiday Gift Ideas: Gadgets

Knitting Yarn Ball Winder
Transform hanks or skeins into compact center-pull balls that sit nicely while you knit. As with our Options needles, Knit Picks interviewed knitters to find out what they would like best in a ball winder—what Knit Picks found is that everyone is different. Some knitters prefer to hold their ball winder while some prefer to clamp it to a table, so Knit Picks created a ball winder that could do both. Use the clamp for tables or connect the ergonomic handle to use when you want to hold it. Best when used in tandem with a Yarn Swift. Note: The metal yarn guide arm comes folded against the ball winder for shipping. The guide arm needs to be moved and positioned opposite the winding handle for correct operation.
$24.97

Knitting Yarn Wood Swift
Knit Picks has spent the past several months scouring the world and found a small Italian manufacturer to make the Yarn Swift more affordable. The swifts are made from Italian grown beech hardwood and last a lifetime! Hold your hanks on the swift while you wind them into balls. Clamp onto table or counter tops. Easy loading is possible if you start with the umbrella in the down position. Put the open loop of the hank over the swift and pull it lightly so the far side of the hank is against the centre of the umbrella section and you are holding the hank out perpendicular to the swift. Then, use your free hand to slide up the umbrella clamp, opening the umbrella to the circumference of the hank. Secure the clamp in place and wind away. Measures approx. 26?” in diameter (68″ circumference) and 26″ tall when open.
$74.97

Knit Picks Interlocking Foam Blocking Mats
Forget those cumbersome folding boards or random towels lying around the house. These foam rubber mats fit together like puzzle pieces to make the size and shape you need. Contains nine 12″ squares, 3/8″ thick.
$24.97

Knitter’s Pride Foam Blocking Mats
Pack of 9 pieces (3 blue, 3 pink, 3 green), each 1 foot x 1 foot, comes in a clear vinyl case.
$39.97

Knit Picks Lace Blocking Wires
Simply slip the wire through the edges of your lace project and place pins along the inside of the wires to hold them in place while the lace dries. If you have scalloped edges you will want to slip the wire through the outer edges of your scallops to emphasize them. Follow the same rules as pin or string blocking by measuring the radius of your finished piece as you adjust the wires. Set comes with 15 (32 1/2″ long) straight wires (est. 15 gauge), 20 nickel-plated T-pins and blocking instructions. All wires are stainless steel and rust proof. The first time you use your blocking wires, wipe them with a soft cloth to remove manufacturing residue.
$24.97

Royal Ball Winder
For the serious knitter, a ball winder is indispensable! Once you have one you won’t know how you lived without it. The Royal winder is a great quality gadget that runs beautifully and smoothly!
$69.95

Holiday Gift Ideas: Bags & Needle Cases

The EcoBag is potentially the ultimate project tote (or carry-on luggage). The extended zipper opens down the width of the bag for easy access to entire bag interior. Bags are lined in coordinating solid nylon fabric. Bag bottoms feature large rubber mat corners. Handles are just long enough to slip onto a shoulder. The feature we like best is the zippered edges have metal support so the bag keeps its shape when reaching inside and doesn’t droop when carried. Bag comes with a sturdy, adjustable nylon shoulder strap. 18″ x 10″ x 12″.
$46.97

This amazingly lightweight tote features aluminum exterior structure and is completely collapsible. Originally designed as a market tote, it is also a super versatile project tote. The metal structure keeps access to goods inside immediate. Made of durable nylon in great prints; self-fabric lined. Excellent quality. Exterior pocket. 18″ x 10″ x 9.5″.  $32.97

GoKnit Pouch - Small
GoKnit Pouches/Project Bags

Brightly colored, lightweight, ripstop nylon fabric makes this innovative knitting bag irresistible. Plenty of room for a couple of balls of yarn and a set of needles. The interior snapped guide loop keeps your working yarn in order. Snap the outer loop over your wrist or attach it to your purse strap or belt loop to knit anywhere, anytime! We also love these bags because they are super sturdy and last FOREVER! Note: Jewel Collection & Orchid cost a little bit more
Small: 8″ high x 6″ wide – $23.97 and up
Medium: 11″ high x 8″ wide – $30.47 and up
Large: 13″ high x 11″ wide – at $38.97 and up

DellaQ Needle Cases
Please note, colours shown are suggestions and may not be available in store, as inventory is limited.

Cleo stands on her own with pockets, pockets, pockets – four exterior and two interior. She won’t let you down and fall over. She’s a caddy and not a shoulder bag. Don’t try to throw her over your shoulder, she prefers to swing next to you. The Cleo Yarn Caddy is perfect for a medium size project. We threw this bag in a front loading washing machine and let it air dry. It looks fantastic! It is a bit softer, but it is still stiff enough to stand up. The inside includes a zip pocket and an open pocket for smaller tools. 8″ wide, 12.5″ high (handles not included).
$46.97

Haven’t made the decision yet whether you like straights, circulars or double points? Maybe you like them all and want them in one case. This tri-fold case includes nine pockets in the center for circulars. The outer flaps hold 18 straights and/or double points. We know this is a common design, but our case holds more than most cases and it is far prettier! The case is tall enough for those needles that insist on being a bit too tall to fit in any other case. There are no numbers like many of our other cases so you’ll need to be a little bit organized or keep a needle gauge in the case. Oh, right, there is also a zip pocket for stitch markers or a piece of chocolate. Fold it up and tie it in a bow (refer to your mother for bow tying instructions).
