NEW FREE PATTERN The Cottage Wrap

Cottage Wrap

This simple wrap combines two fundamentals of knitting to create a reversible, welted texture: stocking stitch and reverse stocking. It is knitted on the bias, increasing in width as you go, so you can make it any size you like and use any tension of yarn you like – it’s a great stash-buster! The pattern may look long and complicated, but it isn’t, it’s just written with detail for inexperienced knitters and people with short attention spans. The pattern repeat is long, so a chart is included to guide you and help you keep track of where you are in the pattern. You can use any yarn you like, which makes it a great stash buster (see amounts below).

Its called the cottage wrap because it’s a great thing to wrap around your shoulders on a cool night, but maybe especially at the cottage. It is a freebie, from us to you. Please enjoy this pattern as we all emerge from our nests with joy and trepidation.

  • Depends on your yarn and the size you desire

Yarns

The amount of yarn you use is flexible and depends on the type of fibre you choose and the thickness of the yarn – you’ll probably need 2 scarves worth of yarn. Yarns that are knit as a looser fabric will go further, yarns knit tighter may require some extra, especially bulky to super bulky weight yarns. Use a needle size that works for your yarn.

Lastly ….

This pattern has been percolating for a long time … it was a victim of a bit of “scope-creep“, the result of some underlying issues with perfectionism (and the sundry crud that that springs from). I’d like to say thank you to my sample knitters Tessa and Adrienne, who made the wraps in the pictures and helped edit the pattern. Thank you to Erica, Noel and Rosie for just putting up with me. Thanks to Judit who helps me clear the blocks. Thanks also go to everyone whose been so patient and waited for me to finish the pattern. This pattern was far from being my dissertation and definitely not my life’s work, but it was a bit of an albatross. I’d like to raise a toast to letting go of our tethers and stretching our wings: may it be the first of many similar experiences for us all. In the words of my then eight year old nice: “You watch this girl go!”

Irish Sea

The Yarn

I usually lead with details about the pattern, but when you’re using Quince & Co Sparrow the main character in the story is always the yarn. Sparrow is one of my absolute favourite summer yarns, I never ever get tired of wearing the garments I make with it and I’m always planning my next project with it in the back of my head. It’s the best linen I’ve ever come across, once it is washed it is deliciously soft, cool, light and comfortable. It’s not that I don’t work with other yarns, it’s just that this is just the one I always go back to. I have two sweaters made with it and I wear them as soon as the weather gets warm – they’re like my summer uniform. I need to make a third this year because I need it in another colour (which is really the only thing that’s been holding me up).

Sparrow is organic, made in Italy, and is machine washable. I generally machine wash mine in a delicate bag (to keep it from abrading) and machine dry it on low in the bag. (The label says to lay it flat to dry, but I like it better if it’s been in the dryer at least a little).

Yarn Substitutions

If you’re not a linen person and you’re never going to be a linen person, I get it. but you want to make a shawl, my favourite sub would be Fibre Co Meadow, cause it’s gorgeous and you’re going to LURV making and wearing your project. BC Garn Bio Balance would make a slightly more casual look, and the wrap would be a smidge warmer (it’ll bring the price-point down too – $52). For a more rustic look and a really affordable project, try Berroco Remix Light, you only need two skeins (only $32).

The Pattern

The pattern, Ashtona, is an asymmetrical, sideways knit shawl. It combines combines pretty ribbon lace with an uneven ribbing motif – think waves lapping against a shoreline grooved with tiny rivulets and ripples in the sand. The piece is worked on the bias from the right tip to the wide left edge. Both charts and line-by-line instructions included.

Skill Level: Intermediate (see below for a list with links) – I wouldn’t make this as your first lace project, there might be a few too many hoops to jump through, but it should be fine for a second.

RESTOCK Malabrigo Rios

Malabrigo Rios

We just received a big restock or Malabrigo Rios (and are expecting more to come in in a couple of weeks). There have been so many constraints over the last year, finally being able to get a decent re-stock feels so good!

Should not already be familiar with this wonderful yarn, Malabrigo Rios is a super-duper soft, machine washable yarn made from 100% merino wool. It’s hand dyed for subtle variations, and is great for anyone and any project except felting (it will not felt). Rios is specially suitable for babies, kids (it makes great hats, sweaters, blankets, etc). The dyeing tends to have a watercolour effect and it always seems to knit up even more beautiful than in the skein. The base yarn is silky soft and springy with lots of body. Whenever I can I like to use it for projects I make for my niece and nephew (sometimes the colours don’t fit their very specific requests).

A Note on Working with Hand-Dyes

Because this yarn is hand-dyed no two skeins are alike (for the multi-colours different skeins within the same bag can look different). We always try to match the skeins as closely as possible when we send them out. To get the most consistent colour distribution possible, it is always suggested with hand-dyed yarns that you work with two balls and alternate them every couple of rows. Here’s a Video to help you with this.

Flax

Make. All. The Sweaters. Malabrigo Rios has been used 889 times on Ravelry to make Tin Can Knit’s FREE pattern, Flax. Flax is an all-size design (but it’s limited exclusively to humans; canine, feline, avian, and reptilian sizes are note included) and will fit babies to the largest primate (you may need to make modifications if you’re knitting for one of our cousins on the evolutionary tree … and good luck getting a sweater on a gorilla outside of Photoshop).

Rye

Malabrigo Rios has been use 539 times to make this particular pair of socks, Rye. Rye is a great pattern for new sock knitters, it includes how-to instructions, and a full size range from baby to Adult L. Whether you’ve retreats the the cottage, your back-yard or the public park, socks are a great small project that travels extremely well and makes for a very impressive holiday gift.

BTW – getting your winter gifts done over the summer is the absolutely most satisfying feeling you’ll ever experience. It involves a little delayed satisfaction, but come October you’ll be extremely pleased with yourself, especially when you get the itch to make something nice for yourself and you find that you can!

Moss on the Old Oak

Moss on the Old Oak is the kind of warp I yearn for on cool says and nights from the spring to fall. It’ll knit up beautifully in either the multicoloured or semi-solid colourways of Malabrigo Rios, and the pattern is offered in three sizes. It’s an advanced-beginner skill level, which is a nice niche for the spring.

Mrs Watson

I’ve kind of been into slightly order patterns lately, not necessarily ‘vintage’ or retro, but things I think are awesome, maybe a bit different, but didn’t get the traction that other patterns do. I think of them like the Miros or Gaudis of the pattern landscape: peripheral, but absolutely brilliant.

One of these gems is Mrs. Watson by Martina Behm. I love the asymmetry and the graphic quality of the design. The shape is just interesting, and I like the way it draws inspiration from nature in the markings on a feather or a leaf (yeah, I know, I have a bird, I know feathers and leaves don’t actually look like that, but you get the concept). The stripes are created using short rows and an asymmetrical shape is achieved using strategic increases (don’t worry, it only sounds hard, it’s actually pretty straightforward).

This pattern also comes with a small technical bonus – it’s all garter stitch, which means you don’t have to unwrap any of you short-rows! If you are familiar with the short-row technique, then you already know that this is the fussier part of it, so it’s great to be able to skip it.

The Yarns

While I was swatching summer yarn samples from Berroco I had one of my “you know what would work well together …?!” moments. Berroco Medina knit up in such a beautiful colourway, I thought it might really hit the spot for a summer wrap (it’s a blend of cotton, viscose & acrylic). I paired it with Berroco Mantra, a 100% silk yarn, which is it’s a matte silk with a slightly slightly rustic look. Both are summer yarns, neither contain any woolly ingredients – perfect for a spring & summer wrap!

If you want to use a winter (wool) yarn, I suggest Fibre Co Acadia for the main colour and Schoppel Edition 3 as the contrast (you can also flip the solid vs ombre yarn, I’m trying that out right now). If you only want to use solid colours then you’ve got lots of options, just about anything Sport Weight to DK Weight will work.

Colours

I’ve gone through all of the colours for both yarns and paired them up with their best candidates for this project. If there is a combo that I missed, you can choose the “Choose Your Own Colours” option and leave us a note when you check out (or email) with your choice. 

The design works extremely well with a high contrast between the two yarns, especially the neutral cream as the main colour and the shifting colourway of a darker contrast colour. This kind of pairing is a no-brainer – natural/cream goes with just about everything, and it always makes the coloured yarn pop. I used main colour 4402 Cream and contrast colour 4733 Agadir.

There is, however, a case for colours that are a bit closer together, they just have to be colours that work well together and respect the balance in the pattern. You may not always get the same distinct patterning, but it can be gorgeous in a waving, undulating way. If you feel like the high contrast print is a bit too stark for you, consider one of these combos, they’re more subtle.

Modifications

I made our shawl a bit larger than the pattern (see Larger Size in the drop-down menu) by adding an extra three pattern repeats in “Leaf Pattern 3” and “Leaf Pattern 4” (a total of 6 leaf patterns between the two sections combined). 

I did not block our sample because I was enjoying it exactly as it is, but these yarns will block well and can be blocked aggressively if you want to make your shawl larger. 

I did not carry the yarn up the side and don’t recommend doing this – it left A LOT of ends to weave in and used up yarn unnecessarily.  I strongly recommend following this tutorial on how to elegantly carry colours up the side: https://youtu.be/mDYQVKETTUw

Like I mentioned above, I did not block our sample, but these yarns will block well can be blocked aggressively if you want to make your shawl larger. 

  • Regular Size (following pattern instructions): approx 66″ long x 20″ across (blocked, made with Berroco Ultra Alpaca on 4mm/US6 needles)
  • Larger Size (with 6 extra pattern repeats): 68″ long x 20″ across (unblocked, made with Berroco Medina & Berroco Mantra on 3.75mm/US5 needles. Will be substantially larger if blocked aggressively)

Knit it Hacks

  • I like to put a locking stitch marker in my wraps so I can find them easily and keep track of how many I’ve done (it isn’t necessary, but I find I makes life easier).
  • I also use locking stitch markers to mark sections of the pattern, so I can quickly look and see how many repeats I’ve finished.

Falls of Foyers

This shawl is named after a waterfall called Falls of Foyers that feeds into the famous deep freshwater Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland. It is worked down and out from the centre of the top edge. There is an option to make a nice stretchy upper neck edge by adding a yarn over after the very first stitch of every row (RS and WS) and then drop it again on the following row.

Armadale is named after a small village called Armadale on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. It is worked from the centre of the top edge down and out. Kelso

The Kelso shawl takes its name from a charming Scottish border town which lies nestled in the confluence of the Tweed and Teviot rivers. Known for the romance of its ruined abbey, graceful bridges, and cobblestone streets, it is a place to lose yourself in time as you wander along the riverbanks. Kelso captures the different textures of river and town, with wonderful three-coloured stripes, flickering eyelets and simple lace. Tobermory

The Tobermory shawl is named after an impossibly beautiful seaside town on the Isle of Mull in Scotland, where brightly painted buildings sparkle against the dark blue bay. Legend has it that a Spanish galleon laden with gold lies at the bottom of that bay, lost in the 16th Century and never recovered. The stripes of the crescent shaped Tobermory shawl hint at the promise of riches beneath the waves. Its easy lace and eyelets were planned to thoughtfully showcase two colours of the gorgeous Road to China Light yarn: lustrous, subtly tonal, and always treasured.

You guys have been feeling kinda blah these days – I hear that! Let’s start looking towards spring for inspiration (springspiration). I’m looking forward to the brighter colours, new textures, and the refreshing little changes that a new season brings. We just got our first shipment of Berroco Remix Light, it’s so refreshing to see fun, pretty spring and summer colours!

Speaking of changes, the province may be allowing retail stores to reopen soon, but we are not going to reopen for in-store shopping until I feel comfortable that it’s safe … and I don’t feel that right now. I know it’s a bummer, and the opposite of what your weary heart wants to hear, but in challenging times doing the right thing is rarely the easy thing. Berroco Remix Light

We just got fresh some fresh spring stock of Berroco Remix Light, a multi-seasonal yarn that’s so comfortable you’ll find the garments made with it become some of your favourites (you know, the one you wear over and over and over again, until you get tired of the colour so you make another in a new colour … etc). It’s super soft, light, breathable, machine washable, and it’s made in France from an eco-friendly blend of 100% recycled fibres.

It’s great for people who are allergic to wool, and light enough for perfect for people whose bodies run warm and wearing a knit is more about dressing and less about warmth. It’s popularity also stems from it’s INCREDIBLE yardage – it’s a DK weight yarn that comes in a 100g/400m skein (for those of you who don’t live in a yarn store, that’s like a bonus 150m to 200m). Adrienne just knit up this gorgeous SWERVE for us using one of the Fleece Artist/Handmaiden Halo Bundles. The shawl is a delicate combination of fingering weight merino alternated with a fine kid-mohair, making it light, feminine, but also interesting. The yarn bundles are dyed together, so you don’t have to worry about combing or matching your yarns, and they’re also very reasonably priced at $43.97 each. Plus, the pattern knits up on 5.5mm/US9 needles, so it won’t take *forever* to work up!

Today is accessories day! Last time we covered some inspiring sweater projects, but now it’s time to look at some smaller, faster, and simpler projects. My choice of projects is simple and accessible. There have been so many new knitters since COVID landed, and I know you don’t have the same access to in-person education that you normally would. Knitting has historically been taught from person to person, and i know how hard it’s been on you trying to learn from books and the internet. I’m also hearing from so many people who tell me they’re experiencing brain-fog and are having a hard time focussing – you’re in VERY good company and I’ve been trying to keep that in mind when I choose suggestions.

Easy Folded Poncho

I love this poncho, it transcends trends and always keeps you cozy and warm. It’s easy to knit (just one long stockinette rectangle), easy to finish, and easy to throw on.

Beginner (after your first scarves), less experienced knitters, or those of us with COVID related brain-fog who need something REALLY simple.

Rikke

A lot of people undervalue the textural possibilities of garter stitch, but it makes for simple, a beautiful aesthetic while adding extra warmth and stretch. It doesn’t hurt that the Acadia’s luxe-rustic texture just looks better with texture.

Skill Level

This project is great for less experienced knitters. You may not want to make it your very first-ever hat (go for a thicker yarn and very basic beanie or slouchy beanie shape for that), but it’s good for adding a few more small skills.

Age of Brass & Steam Kerchief

Kerchief sized wraps are great little projects, a good way to test out a smaller quantity of yarn, and if you want it bigger you can keep knitting. Kerchiefs are super popular as scarfy/neck accessories: they cover up your vulnerable parts without all the bulk around the sides and hanging down your front.

Boneyard Shawl

The Boneyard Shawl is an oldie but a goodie. The simplicity of the design lets the yarn shine, plus its an easy knit for less experienced knitters. It’s a bit bigger than the Age of Brass & Steam Kerchief, and gives you more coverage.

Drachenfels Wrap Kit

This simple wrap makes for great TV knitting! Stave off the chill wind with this cosy shawl, which pays homage to the dragon of lore with a slipped garter colorwork pattern that hints of scales. It’s worked in garter stitch from tip to edge, then neatly finished with I-cord bind-off. Asymmetrical increases create an elongated triangle shape. Size: 83“ [210 cm] wingspan along top edge and 25.5“ [65 cm] width.

Kit

The Drachenfels Wrap Kit features a stunning shawl pattern is by Melanie Berg. It contains one skein of Urth Yarns Uneek Fingering and two skeins of Urth Yarns Monokrom Fingering (a total of1200m of fingering weight merino yarn per kit). Each kit comes packaged in a clear plastic bag with full-colour insert. Both yarns are super soft 100% superwash merino wool, made and hand-dyed in Turkey. The pattern recommends a 4mm/US6 and 5mm/US8 needle. 

The brown colourway in the photographs is 03. The purple is colourway 02 (photos by Ninkka).
