KITS Turmeric + Rooibos Pre-Order

The following two projects were so beautiful that I wanted to share them, despite their being slightly out of season. Even if you don’t pick one up now, it’ll be in the back of your head – the sweater you want to wear next fall …. the sweater that almost makes you wish winter was a little bit longer. Almost. And of course, some of you live in places where winter is a bit longer and summer is a little shorter … the sweater belt.

These easy projects feature a simple, top-down construction in the round for minimal finishing. They have a lovely depth of colour and texture, created by working with 2 strands of yarn held together (don’t worry, its easy). One is a hand-painted Peruvian wool, the other a light, lace-weight blend of kid-mohair & silk. The combination is stunning, the two yarns blend together so gracefully that they look like they were made for each other. The thicker yarn provides the main colour palette and the mohair delicately colours in the back-ground. I sat down with the shade cards, comparing colours to figure out which colours work best together, so you don’t have to worry about what goes with what. I put together a bunch of options, but my favourite colour combinations are the ones where the mohair picks up the most dominant colour in the hand-painted yarn.

The Yarns

Berroco Ultra Wool Handpaint is a classic worsted weight, 100% Superwash Peruvian wool. Ultra Wool Handpaint is hand-dyed using a watercolor brush technique. The result is the machine-washable wool you love with speckled colors throughout. We recommend alternating skeins to get a cohesive overall look as each skein is unique. Use it along with our Ultra Wool for unlimited combinations. 100% Superwash Wool, 100g/200m (219 yds), made in Peru.

Berroco Aerial is an airy and light blend of mohair and silk. It’s a perfect yarn to carry along with any one of our work-horse yarns to give a soft halo to any project. 65% Superkid Mohair, 35% Silk, 25g/260m (284 yds). Hand-wash in cold water, lay flat to dry.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a classic oversized, simple circular yoke pullover combining  Berroco Ultra Wool Handpaint and Berroco Aerial for an allover dreamy look. This easy project creates depth of colour and texture by working with 2 strands of yarn held together (don’t worry, it’s not hard). Turmeric is worked in one piece in the round, from the top-down.

You guys have been feeling kinda blah these days – I hear that! Let’s start looking towards spring for inspiration (springspiration). I’m looking forward to the brighter colours, new textures, and the refreshing little changes that a new season brings. We just got our first shipment of Berroco Remix Light, it’s so refreshing to see fun, pretty spring and summer colours!

Speaking of changes, the province may be allowing retail stores to reopen soon, but we are not going to reopen for in-store shopping until I feel comfortable that it’s safe … and I don’t feel that right now. I know it’s a bummer, and the opposite of what your weary heart wants to hear, but in challenging times doing the right thing is rarely the easy thing. Until things shift, we’re here for pick-up, shipping and delivery, and our turnaround for same-day pick-up is usually well under an hour, seven days a week. I know you are chafing at the bit to get in and see everything with your own eyes, but until that’s feasible we’re still here to help you choose the right products by email or phone.

Berroco Remix Light

We just got fresh some fresh spring stock of Berroco Remix Light, a multi-seasonal yarn that’s so comfortable you’ll find the garments made with it become some of your favourites (you know, the one you wear over and over and over again, until you get tired of the colour so you make another in a new colour … etc). It’s super soft, light, breathable, machine washable, and it’s made in France from an eco-friendly blend of 100% recycled fibres.

It’s great for people who are allergic to wool, and light enough for perfect for people whose bodies run warm and wearing a knit is more about dressing and less about warmth. It’s popularity also stems from it’s INCREDIBLE yardage – it’s a DK weight yarn that comes in a 100g/400m skein (for those of you who don’t live in a yarn store, that’s like a bonus 150m to 200m). Remix Light is great for sweaters, tanks, tees, blankets, socks, scarves, shawls, bags, etc. It’s great for everyone: babies, kids, adults. It’s a Double Knitting weight yarn and can be used for any pattern that calls for that (and sometimes you can get away with Sport weight or even some Fingering weight patterns).

  • 10% silk, 9% linen, 27% cotton, 30% nylon, 24% acrylic

Amber Waves Kit

Amber Waves is a very cleverly designed triangular shawl. It begins at one tip and is worked sideways with a traveling charted stitch pattern to mimic waves of wheat on the plains. The finished shawl blocks out to more than 7 feet long, but only requires two balls of Berroco Remix Light.

Bixby

Bixby is a simple shawl collar cardigan using Berroco Artesia and Berroco Providence. Two colors of Providence are striped along with a single color of Artesia to create a fade effect. Bixby is knit seamlessly in the round in one piece from the bottom up. Shown in colourway 1A: 4801 + 1115/1119.

Drachenfels Wrap Kit

This simple wrap makes for great TV knitting! Stave off the chill wind with this cosy shawl, which pays homage to the dragon of lore with a slipped garter colorwork pattern that hints of scales. It’s worked in garter stitch from tip to edge, then neatly finished with I-cord bind-off. Asymmetrical increases create an elongated triangle shape. Size: 83“ [210 cm] wingspan along top edge and 25.5“ [65 cm] width.

Kit

The Drachenfels Wrap Kit features a stunning shawl pattern is by Melanie Berg. It contains one skein of Urth Yarns Uneek Fingering and two skeins of Urth Yarns Monokrom Fingering (a total of1200m of fingering weight merino yarn per kit). Each kit comes packaged in a clear plastic bag with full-colour insert. Both yarns are super soft 100% superwash merino wool, made and hand-dyed in Turkey. The pattern recommends a 4mm/US6 and 5mm/US8 needle. 

The brown colourway in the photographs is 03. The purple is colourway 02 (photos by Ninkka).

We’re Taking Pre-Orders For Nixe Kits NOW!

I just ordered the NIXE kit this afternoon – it’s so pretty I couldn’t pass it up! Nixe is an upcoming new pattern by designer Melanie Berg, scheduled to launch on August 26th, 2020. This two-colored asymmetrical triangle shawl, with an easy-to-knit yet beautiful stitch pattern that resembles a mermaid’s tail. The yarn, Balayage by @pascuali_filati_naturali, is a gorgeous blend of alpaca and organic, non-mulesed merino wool.

PREORDER Hug Shot Wrap Kits

This kit showed up in my in-box today after my morning meditation and the colours were so fun and so happy that I couldn’t resist. These days, I don’t know anybody who couldn’t use some colour in their lives – enjoy the sun & have some fun!

NOTE: this is a PREORDER, the kits are on order and will ship/can be picked up once they arrive.

The Pattern

The Hug Shot is a new, forthcoming pattern from Casapinka. It’s an asymmetric rectangle (or “boomerang”) shawl that begins at the small end and ends up with a wide border at the opposite end. There are slipped stitches, garter and stockinette making it a fairly easy project. The pattern is knit on 4mm/US6 needles. If you only want the pattern and aren’t into the kit, check in with Casapinka in about a week, when the pattern will be released.

NOTE: when you purchase your kit you’ll be provided with a code to download the pattern for free on Ravelry. The pattern can be downloaded from June 5th to 14th, so order your kit soon! (Don’t worry, if you aren’t computer savvy we will help get it to you.) If you want to make sure that the pattern resides in your Ravelry account be sure to purchase your kit before June 7th.

The Yarn

Ancient Arts Socknado is a beautiful fingering weight blend of super soft superwash merino wool and nylon (80/20). We don’t currently carry it in store, but I’ve swatched it and it meets my approval (it rated 2 out of 3 smiley faces, which is pretty good because three smiley faces is OMG, WTF, YES! YES! YES!). Socknado comes in 100g skeins of 350m each, so if you just like the colours and aren’t into this particular pattern you’ll have lots of yarn for another project (or two). It’s ideal for all kinds of knits & crochets, including socks (my mind is conjuring up some super funky baby garments). Socknado is Canadian made and hand dyed by extremely lovely people in Calgary Alberta.

Year of Gifts Preorder

Better late than never … last year Kelbourne Woolens had their Year of Hats, and this year they have come out with a super cute series of monthly kits for gift projects you can either keep or give away (see January & February below)! Each kit comes with yarn, a pattern, it’s own cotton project bag (or gift bag), notions, and some other fun stuff. Each month will be a completely different project by a different designer and with a different yarn. Needles are not included. The patterns are all available for $5 and downloaded on Ravelry. Each month’s kit is an absolute surprise, we won’t know what it is until the first of each month.

The Primrose Mittens are worked in the round from the cuff to top of hand. The cuff is worked in a broken ribbing, and the hand is worked from a chart. The thumb is worked using the afterthought (peasant) method.

Year of Gift Kit: January Snowdrop Hat

The Snowdrop Hat by Kate Gagnon Osborn begins with a provisional cast on, then a folded brim is worked in a K2, P2 Ribbing. Once the ribbing is complete, the provisional cast on is unpicked and placed on a spare circular needle and the stitches are joined to created a folded brim.

After the brim is complete, the body of the hat is worked in a graphic stranded colorwork pattern from a chart. The chart is worked 5 times around. Decreases shape the crown, and a pom pom and a cute custom KW tag completes the look.
