Noro Kureopatora

Noro Kureopatora is a one of Noro’s softest and most versatile yarns, and we’ve restocked it for fall! Made from a blend of different types of wool,  this single ply yarn looks great knit, crochet, or felted. One skein goes a long way -each carries a generous yardage of 270m/276 yards, and it blooms, so you can use a variety of needle sizes with it (two skeins are more than enough for a scarf). We made Lala’s Simple Shawl with 3 skeins and a Noro Striped Scarf with 2 skeins.

  • 100% Merino Blend Wool
  • 100g/270m (276 yds)
  • 4.5mm needles
  • 20 sts & 26 rows = 4″ (10cm)
  • Worsted Weight

Moss on the Old Oak

Moss on the Old Oak

This wrap just caught my attention on Ravelry and I felt like I had to share. It’s so cozy and pretty, wouldn’t it be the perfect addition to a fall wardrobe? I’m visualizing myself throwing it on over jeans and a sweater and sauntering out the door (this is my fantasy life, it involves a lot of knitwear and walking to nowhere to do nothing).

It is made with one of my favourites, Malabrigo Rios. Rios is soft, smooth, and squishy – in other words a delight wort work with and to wear. It’s made with machine washable Uruguayan merino wool, which is then hand dyed. Yummy! If you’re on a budget and want something a bit more modestly priced try using Cascade 220 Heathers (ON SALE NOW), Cascade 220 Superwash Heathers, or Berroco Vintage – they all have the same yardage and will give you great results.

The pattern is discounted ($3US/$4CAD) until the end of Friday July 22, so be sure to pick it up now if you are interested because the brice will be going up!

FREEBIE! Augusta Shawl

Augusta

Augusta is simple little something, light and easy for spring and summer. Use a light cotton like Cascade Ultra Pima Fine, which is easy to wear all year round, crochet’s like a dream, and won’t break the bank. I think this pattern would also look amazing made with Freia Ombre Lace with it’s gradual colour shift, or a lace like Malabrigo Lace Baby Merino or Malabrigo Silkpaca Lace.

FINISHED Nuvem

Nuvem 4

Nuvem

We just finished our store sample Nuvem this weekend and I couldn’t he happier with it! It’s got to be the loveliest, most wearable wrap I’ve ever come across (actually, I have one just like it that I bought in Paris a million years ago, a real wardrobe staple, but I think that just proves my point). If you’re the kind of person who shies away from paying for patterns I recommend this one, it’s a good investment, you’ll love your Nuvem and want to make it again and again.

The wrap is made in one piece, worked simultaneously on two long circular needles (don’t worry, it isn’t difficult, these things always sound harder than they are) from the centre out. Actually, once you get it set up it’s mostly mindless knitting – perfect for the cottage, patios, travel, or Game of Thrones. If you’re the kind of person who hates to purl you’ll be especially happy, it’s all knit stitch in the round.

Notes

We used 2 skeins of Malabrigo Mechita, yarn of gorgeous happiness. We didn’t make it super full sized, but two skeins got it just right, a nice size between scarf and wrap. If you want a proper wrap you’ll definitely need an extra skein, and for a big wrap get 4 skeins total (see filzwichtel’s nuvem made with 4, it’s amazing).  We wet blocked ours in Eucalan and laid it flat to dry, stretched and pinned down at intervals.

Size

These are the dimensions for OUR project after blocking and un-stretched. You can make your Nuvem larger if you choose, see the Nuvem pattern for full details (theirs was 68″x30″/170cm x 75cm) or browse the Helpful Projects on Ravelry.

  • Length end to end: 60″/152cm
  • Width at middle: 16.5″/42cm

FINISHED & RESTOCKED: Quince Sparrow

Quince and Co Sparrow Groovy citron

Quince and Co Sparrow Groovy Citron combo BLOG

Groovy (DK)

This project has been finished for a few weeks, but I was waiting for the yarn to come in to set it free digitally (I try not to tease if the yarn isn’t available – that’s not nice). I think Linen is my favourite Spring/Summer fibre. It’s stiff in the skein, but loosens up, even springs up, after blocking. Plus care/blocking is so easy, it’s just machine wash & dry! It never ceases to amaze me how relaxed this textile gets. It’s also kind of cool against your skin. The Groovy Wrap was definitely a good first run to see how the yarn behaves (no biggie if a wrap is too big or small).

The Quince and Co Sparrow is an especially lovely specimen. It’s organic, 100% linen and has a softness and sheen after washing.  Presently, I’m swatching for a Lineal cardie in Sparrow. My suggestion for needles is use the kind you are used to and most comfortable with. I initially tried metal because i thought the points would be handy, but they aren’t my ‘thing’ and my gauge was off. My tension has been good with bamboo, which is what I normally use.

New Store Project: Groovy in Noro SGSS

I just finished blocking our Groovy made with Noro Silk Garden Sock Solo.  The yarn is deceptively puffy, and we accidentally used the wrong needle size (3.5mm/US4) and it came out a bit too tight for my liking. You can go up a size or two, to 3.75mm or 4mm needles (US5 or 6) and it’ll worked great!  The pattern was simple, not at all complex, well written and easy to follow. You can make your wrap/scarf deeper without doing math. The yarn is pretty, slightly tweedy, a slightly textured single ply. I tried blocking with both Soak and Eucalan and preferrred the Eucalan for this yarn – it makes it soft and pouffs it up. The garment is very flexible, it can be worn as a scarf, wrap or shawl, a great accessory for any wardrobe!
You’ll Need:

SALE Noro Prism Kits

I wear this shawl all the time in the store, so much in fact that we had to make a second sample for the store.  People are constantly asking me what it is and how to make it. It’s a free pattern from Ravelry, and is really easy – the yarn does all the work. Our samples were made with two skeins of Noro Silk Garden Sock in two colourways: one main colour and one contrast colour (you can also use Noro Silk Garden Sock Solo for the contrast colour). The colours are carried up the side and alternated every other row – no cutting yarn, no weaving in endless ends.  Added bonus, it’s on sale until the end of May!
  • 3.75mm/US5-32″ (or longer) circular needles
  • stitch markers

New Store Project: Lala’s Simple Shawl

Fresh off the blocking mat, we just finished up this shawl and it is great! The pattern is FREE, Lala’s Simple Shawl. We made it extra big, and it is super cozy and a truly stunning wrap. I didn’t realize that when triangular shawls are made really, really big, they don’t really look very triangular when worn.
Yarn
We used the new Noro Kureopatora yarn and it was PERFECT! It’s a single ply, woollen spun yarn, which means it’s light, airy, and warm. It feels a bit coarse in the ball, but it softens up in your hands while knitting, and even more so after washing in Eucalan and blocking. It’s also got amazing yardage, we only needed 3 skeins to make this great big wrap! Oh, and the yarn is on SALE until the end of May!  If you want a Summer friendly version you can substitute 4 skeins of Noro Taiyo (also on sale).
Pattern
The pattern (Lala’s Simple Shawl) is definitely beginner/novice friendly, so much so that I got a little bored and threw in a few modifications:
  • Instead of increasing with a yarn over down the middle, we used a backwards loop cast on.
  • I got bored with the stitch pattern and threw in some variety: see stitch & crossed stitch  (see our Ravelry page for the nitty gritty).
