Berroco Mystery Blanket Knit Along PRE-ORDER

Many of you picked up your materials for the 2025 Berroco Mystery Blanket KAL last week, but there’s no deadline to join and we’re always happy to order a kit it for you. We carry the yarn, Berroco Vintage, year round and are constantly restocking, so if you want to you can also just get one skein of each colour and try it on and see if this type of project fits you (although the dye lots won’t match, but it’s a blanket so not a huge deal).

Berroco has thought of just about everything for this KAL … they’ve come out with 7 different colour combinations, and they’ve cleverly drawn up pretty diagrams so you can dream up your own colours combos and get an idea of what the blanket will look like. They’ve already published the pattern for January (see below), and a supporting video is available for techniques and skills (see below). There are online groups available on Facebook and Ravelry where you can meet other MKAL knitters and share your accomplishments (see below).

At the end of 2025, finished projects added to Ravelry will be entered to win a Year’s Worth of Yarn, so make sure to tag your Ravelry project with VintageMKAL25 (Instagram might not hurt either).

HOURS & PROJECTS Canadian Thanksgiving

Pumpkin Beanie … by Knit-O-Matic!

Store Hours For Canadian Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving comes a bit earlier north of the 44th parallel in Canada, it has something to do with our harvest being earlier, therefore we dine earlier. We are open regular store hours (12 to 6 pm) on Saturday & Monday, and closed on Sunday. Have a great weekend, wherever you are!

Saturday October 12: 12 to 6 pm

Sunday October 13: CLOSED

Monday October 14: 12 to 6 pm

Some Cieslak for the Weekend

Never wanting to leave you without some inspiration, here are a couple of pullovers by designer Jacqueline Cieslak. I love that Jacqueline’s designs are size inclusive, but I love even more that her designs LOOK GREAT on different sized women. Her casual little tops are always just right for people, no matter what shape they may be. Wear them over a dress or a loose shirt, it’s all beautiful! Plus, they aren’t immense projects, so they won’t break the bank, and you’ll actually wear it (an important factor to my mind). they’re pretty, and I think its good to make yourself feel beautiful on the outside, because you are beautiful on the inside.

Bay Pullover

The Bay Pullover is your dream all-weather sweatshirt, whether you’re getting cozy at home or being tousled by a crisp ocean breeze. This relaxed fit pullover features dolman sleeves, uninterrupted stockinette on the front and back panels, and decorative 3-needle bind offs, making for a simple, seamless knit with a clean, modern look. The pattern includes 9 sizes, 6 original video tutorials, technical illustrations for understanding the unique construction, and detailed guidance for choosing your size and adjusting the sleeves.

Size

Because of the dolman sleeves and relaxed fit, BAY works with an extremely wide range of positive ease (anything from 6-20”/15-50cm). If you prefer more drape or a more oversized fit, feel free to size up! In the photos, Jacqui is wearing a size 7 (62”/155cm). Her bust circumference is 54”/135cm, her waist circumference is 49”/122.5cm, and her bicep circumference is 20”/50cm.

  • Finished Bust Circumference: In inches: (38, 42, 46) [50, 54, 58] {62, 66, 70} inches or (95, 105, 115) [125, 135, 145] {155, 165, 175} cm
  • To choose your size, measure the circumference of your torso around the fullest part of your bust/chest and add at least 6”/15cm.
  • To see how BAY looks across the size range with varying amounts of ease, check out the test knitting round up here!

Yarn Options

Because the recommended yarn is a silk/linen blend, both of which are fibres that stretch and have a lot of drape, I recommend using something that also has some stretch. Superwash yarns, blends with cotton, linen, wool, silk, or alpaca tend to be good at this.

SABAI Top Knitting Pattern | Ideal for Beginners | Knit with Berroco Modern Cotton DK

nor

Sabai

The SABAI top is a light and airy summer top with a boat neckline. It’s super easy to knit, requires only a few techniques and is therefore ideal for beginners. You can make it with the ribbed collar or just stocking stitch for a simpler rolled edge. I recommend using a DK weight cotton blend like Berroco Modern Cotton DK, for a light, cool, easily washable summer knit.

Construction

The SABAI top is worked seamlessly top down. First, the neckline border is worked in the round in a 1/1 rib stitch pattern and increases are worked for the slanted shoulders. For the armholes, front and back parts are worked separately back and forth. The stitches of front and back are then joined and worked in the round again. The top ends with a narrow ribbed border with a rolled edge. As the top is knitted from the top down, it is possible (and advisable) to try it on while knitting so that the length can be individually adjusted.

Techniques used: left- and right leaning knitted and purled increases.

Size

  • XS (S) M (L) XL (XXL)

    (51.6)”
  • The top can be worn snug with approx. 0 – 2 cm / 0 – 0.8” positive ease, but also works well with a little more room to move (5 – 8 cm / 2 – 3.2” positive ease). For example, if you have a chest circumference of 90 cm / 35.4”, you should choose between size S and M.

Adriata: Sleeveless Lace Top Knitting Pattern

Adriata

This is why you knit! Because you can make pretty, unique things, like Adriata, that you’ll never, ever find in a store or online (or if you did it would cost $500 because it was hand-made). This is it, right here! Adriata is It is worked seamlessly, from the top down. I recommend using a simple, DK weight cotton blend like Berroco Modern Cotton DK, so you can see all the definition from the stunning lace worked around the shoulders and down the side seams. One of the best things about making sleeveless summer is they’re quick, portable little projects that don’t take up enormous amounts of time or energy …. and of course the plant based fibres don’t sweat in warm weather.

Size

  • Finished Bust circumference: 30 (34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66)“ or 75 (85, 95, 105, 115, 125, 135, 145, 155, 165) cm.

PROJECTS Holey Tops

Corran Cardigan

I kinda love an all-over mesh lace sweater (like Look at My Holes or Menden – it’s pretty but also mod and and very retro, all at the same time. The Corran Cardigan is an all-over lace cardigan, knit seamlessly from the bottom up with drop shoulders (this means you’ll be picking up stitches for the sleeves). There are two neckline options: round and V-neck and two sleeve lengths. This pattern can be knit in a wide variety of fibres making it a perfect transitional piece. To see the Corran knit in a variety of yarns and with various modifications, please see the #CorranCardigan on Instagram.

Corran is knit with worsted weight yarn, giving you lots of options for fibres suitable for cool or warm weather (I HEART pragmatic designers, they really understand knitters).

Look At My Holes

I love holes, I love mesh, I love me some BIG lace!

#LookAtMyHoles is a top down, seamless raglan crop top with a simple lace repeat creating large holes all around the garment. The combination of large needles and the lace motif make this an incredibly low yardage pattern. Perfect for layering, this top is designed to be worn with coordinating tank top, #AsFriendsTank by Jessie Mae Martinson. Look at My Holes also looks cool on its own, but for the full effect of the #LookAtMyHolesAsFriendsSet you need to make both!

FINISHED Holger Kids Pullover

Holger Sweater (ages 1 to 14)

We finished the adorable Holger Sweater by Petite Knit … thank you Erica, it’s amazing! It’s a super adorable knit, I love the graphic stripes and bold colour blocks – they’re lively and fun and inspire lots and lots of play and amusement. This particular version of the pattern is sized for toddlers and kids, we made the smallest size (1-2 yrs) and the chest is a generous 28″ in circumference and 13″ from top of shoulder to bottom edge. Be sure to take a look at the finished measurements when you’re choosing a size.

See Finished Projects

SEE OUR BLOG POSTS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY OF HOLGER SWEATERS

We used one of the suggested yarns, Sandnes Garn Double Sunday, because I love the texture of the pure merino wool and the bright colours.

For Size 1-2 we used:

  • Body Colours (Stripes): 1012 Whipped Cream & 1099 Black (2 balls each, but lots left over)
  • Right Sleeve: 5846 Royal Blue (1 ball)
  • Left Sleeve: 9080 Urban Chic (1 ball)
  • Neck: 3819 The Orange Feeling (1 ball)
  • Bottom Hem: 7720 Blue Haze (1 ball)

If merino wool is a bit too much for you right now you can also substitute Berroco Vintage Baby or Berroco Vintage DK (see details below for all yardage requirements).

Construction

The Holger Sweater is worked from the top down. The body is worked in stockinette stitch with stripes, while the sleeves and neck edge are each worked in a different solid color. First, the back yoke is worked back and forth with the slope of the shoulders being shaped using short rows and in stripes, which are worked at the same time. Each shoulder is then worked back and forth on a circular needle, and then the shoulders are joined to form the front yoke. The front and back yoke are joined at the underarms to form the body, which is worked in the round on a circular needle with stripes. The sleeves are worked down from stitches that are picked up and knitted around the armholes. At the end, a folded neck edge is worked from stitches that are picked up and knitted along the neckline.

If merino wool is a bit over budget for you right now you can also substitute Berroco Vintage Baby or Berroco Vintage DK – both are a soft, machine washable blend of wool & synthetic and are perfect for projects for babies and kids. Vintage Baby has a slightly smoother texture and comes in smaller 50g balls, while Vintage DK has a little bit more texture and comes in 100g skeins. The colour range is a bit different, but the base yarns are very similar and can be used interchangeably.

FINISHED Sophie Shawl in Bozzolo

Sophie Shawl in Bozzolo

Sophie is a simple shawl that’s knit horizontally, from tip-to-tip. It’s a quick, easy knit thats great for little projects …. perfect for travelling or patio season. It calls for a worsted eight yarn, but we tried it out with Berroco Vivo, a textured, DK weight, 100% cotton, just to play around and see what would happen. What happened was a really pretty, light little spring/summer wrap

Size

We made a size medium and I feel like it turned out as more of a scarf than a wrap (I had an uncertain amount of yarn on hand and I wasn’t sure how far it would go). We only used 1.22 balls (or 330m) of Berroco Vivo, and I feel like it turned out a bit small as far as wraps go, so if I made another I’d go up to the largest size. If you are using Berroco Vivo you will likely not use as much yarn as is recommended in the pattern, it seems to have gone further than expected.

  • Our Finished Sample: Size Medium – 13″ (33cm) deep, 101″ (252cm) long
  • Pattern Size: S (M) L
  • Pattern Length from tip to tip: approx. 170 (210) 240 cm or 67 (82¾) 94½ inches

Easily Change the Size

Because the pattern is knit from side-to side, its really easy to just knit until you’ve used up half of your yarn, then start the decreases. Just be sure to weigh your yarn before you start, so you know how much is you half-way mark (I use an inexpensive digital kitchen scale from Amazon). If you want you can also make your shawl larger than the largest size, you just need to start your decreases later.

PROJECT Jethro Cardi

Jethro

Jethro is a “throw it on and run out the door” kind of cardi …. my favorite for spring, and like the author says in her pattern blurb, I’m not over granny sweaters! It’s worked in a combination of crocheted granny squares (a great simple skill for inexperienced crocheters) and then the sleeves and ribbing are knitted, creating a really pretty, finished look.

Jethro is designed with a DK weight yarn, so it’s not too light, not too heavy … perfect for variable spring weather. I’m inclined to make it with a springy merino wool, like Sandnes Garn Double Sunday, but it would be equally awesome made with a blend like Berroco Vintage Baby and Berroco Vintage DK (which can be used interchangeably).

The desinger has graciously created a Youtube Playlist with support for skills.

Size

The sizes given are the actual finished full chest measurement of the garment. Choose a size that corresponds to 30-43 cm / 12-17” larger than your upper bust measurement, or the size that will give you the amount of ease you like. I recommend wearing this drop-shoulder style with a lot of positive ease.

  • 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
  • Approximate finished chest: 87.5 (107.5, 124.5, 150.5, 175.5, 200) cm / 34.5 (42.25, 49, 59.25, 69, 78.75)”

Yarn Options

For the Granny Squares you’ll need a total of: 615 (747, 893, 1348, 1385, 1503) metres or 675 (820, 980, 1480, 1520, 1650) yards.

NOTE: The joining round, which is shown in the picture in the main colour, is included in the yardage for the granny squares. If you are planning to make multicoloured granny squares with the joining round worked in your main colour (like the one in the picture), approximately 210 (227, 250, 410, 328, 365) metres or 230 (250, 275, 450, 360, 400) yards of your “granny square” yardage will be in your main colour.

For the sleeves and ribbing you’ll need: 227 (273, 328, 373, 419, 455) metres or 250 (300, 360, 410, 460, 500) yards of the main colour.

PROJECT Satawal Top

Satawal

Satawal is a cropped tee with a simple lace pattern around a boat neck, which looks a bit like a Macramé texture. You can use various weights of yarn, from fingering weight for airy and transparent texture to worsted weight yarn for mid season garment (we used Berroco Modern Cotton on 6mm/US10 needles).

Our Project

We made the second size (size small) with 2 skeins of Berroco Modern Cotton in colour 1648 Abbot Run). It measures approximately 20″ wide (40″ bust circumference) and 20″ tall from top of shoulder to hem (you can of course make it longer if you want to). If you feel like the neck is too wide you can always seam it and make it a closer neck. The fabric has a lot of stretch, and at this tension you’ll probably want to wear it over a light camisole. It’s meant to be worn loose and oversized, with lots of ease!

Modern Cotton is a soft, easy to knit, and very machine washable blend of cotton and Modal Rayon (which is viscose, a plant based cellulose fibre, much like bamboo). It’s easy to wear in warmer weather, and it’s also great for people with allergies to wool or other animal fibres, or who knit vegan.

Many thanks to Erica for whipping up this beautiful top!!! And many thanks to Gru for sitting for photos without having to be bribed or making a mess.

Construction

The pattern is worked seamlessly from the top down. The lace pattern for the yoke is worked in the round with increases at the both right and left shoulders, then the body is divided into the front and the back and worked flat separately to the underarm, where they are joined again. The lower body is knitted in one piece in the round. Sleeve stitches are picked up along armholes and worked in the round.
