PROJECTS Stripe-Hype Pullover & Dress

Stripe Hype Sweater

The Stripe Hype Sweater is a great stash busting project where you can use up scrap yarns or combine your favourite colors in just the way you want. Also, knitting stripes makes this one a really quick project to complete because the curiosity of seeing how every next stripe will affect the overall look is highly addictive, and a lot of fun.The work begins by working the back flat, then stitches are picked up for the left and right front separately and worked flat. The back and front are then joined together and the body is worked in the round. Stitches are picked up for the sleeves and worked in the round and lastly stitches are picked up around the neckline and the collar is worked in a twisted rib stitch.

Size

  • XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)
  • Finished bust circumference: 90 (106, 116, 126, 136) (146, 156, 168, 178) cm / 35.5 (41.75, 45.75, 49.5, 53.5) (57.5, 61.5, 66, 70)”.
  • Length from back neck (excluding collar) to hem: 59 cm / 23.25” all sizes.
  • Sweater is designed to have 20-30 cm / 8-12” of positive ease. Choose a size that is 20-30 cm / 8-12” bigger than your bust circumference for a relaxed and slightly oversized look.

Stripe Hype Dress

The Stripe Hype dress is a relaxed dress that is the absolute perfect “just-throw-it-on” garment for any season. The dress has a dropped shoulder and a boxy fit which makes it modern and easy to knit.

You can customize it to your exact preferences by choosing your favourite colours: go all in and use multiple colours for a really fun and playful vibe (a great option for using up scrap yarns in your stash), or choose just a few colours in a more toned down colour palette for a more classical look. You can also knit it all in one colour.

Try Sandnes Garn Double Sunday or Berroco Vintage DK for the fall or winter. See below for amounts required.

Construction

The dress is worked top down. The work begins by working the back flat, then stitches are picked up for the left and right front separately and worked flat. The back and front are then joined together and the body is worked in the round while increasing stitches along both side seams around the waist and hips for a slight A-line shape. Stitches are picked up for the sleeves and worked in the round and lastly stitches are picked up around the neckline and the collar is worked in a rib stitch.

TRUNK SHOW Berroco Spring/Summer 2022 to June 13

Berroco has sent us a Trunk show – a handful of their summer samples to explore, and they are here in store until June 13th! Its a great way to check out different yarns, see how they knit, and explore patterns you might not have considered otherwise.

It takes a loooong time to load a project up to our online store, so I’ve only put the projects that I think are really special. If you want to make one of the others just contact us and we’ll make that happen the older fashioned way.

Sapphire

Sapphire was my favourite new pattern for Spring/Summer this year from Berroco. It’s such a sweet and wearable little top that looks good on all types of bodies. It looks sweet over a summer dress, or you can wear it with pants, a skirt – it goes with everything. The pattern was designed with Berroco Vivo, but thre are lots of yarn options you can go for (see below for options). To make the arms longer pick-up the sleeves and knit down in pattern stitch to your desired length.

Riveria is a cheerful, simple cotton tee with a lace yoke. It’s worked from the top-down, in the round, to underarms, then divided for body and sleeves. The body is worked in the round to lower edge (the lace yoke pattern is charted).

The Yarn

Berroco Pima Soft is a new, CRAZY SOFT, 2-ply yarn made with 100% pima cotton. It’s slightly textured, making it much more forgiving to knit with than a smooth cotton (which also makes weaving in ends and finishing easier). It’s perfect for anything you want to make, from tees, tanks, sweaters, chemo-hats, babies, blankets, cushions – you name it. It’s a DK weight (21 to 22 sts/4″ on a 3.75mm/US5 to 4mm/US6 needle) so it isn’t too heavy for warm weather or if your internal thermostat runs warm. It’s lovely for crochet and knitting, and is just right for all climates! It’s great for knitting and crochet, and I think it would also make a nice texture in a punch needle project.

  • 100% Pima Cotton
  • 50g/113m (123yds)

  • 3.75 – 4mm/US5 – 6 needles

Goshen

Goshen is one of my favroutie samples that came with the trunk-show. It’s a strudly little purse-sized bag you can wear over your shoulder or across your body. The pattern is designed with Berroco Medina, but you can also use Berroco Summer Sesame (3 balls), which might be easier to work with because it has some texture. Additional yarn alternative are included below (should you want to make it a solid colour, or marled, etc). I would 100%, no question make this for myself and/or as a gift.

SPECIAL ORDER A KIT!

Construction

Goshen is worked with 2 strands held together throughout. It is worked flat and seamed.

Size

  • Bag portion measures approximately 12″ wide x 11½” high (not including strap),
  • Strap is 34″ long (includes tapering, strap is measured from top of bag opening)
  • The finished project weighs 252g, so there is extra yarn left-over to make your strap longer.
Taking a picture of a bag on your body is decidedly challenging …

PROJECTS Giftable Socks

When it comes to gifting socks for the holidays, I have a few key elements that are on my must-have list:

  1. They must be soft and comfortable – if nobody wants to wear them then what’s the point in making them?
  2. They must be machine washable AND stand up to wear. Once they leave the wrapping paper these socks are in the wild, they must be able to defend themselves!
  3. They need to be pretty, or interesting, or have something unique about them. Complicated is definitely not necessary, but some kind of design feature should be present to create a bit of a WOW factor.
  4. It can’t take forever to make them …. the thinnest yarn I want is a DK weight. House socks are a perfectly legitimate holiday gift, especially for wearing around the house during the holidays.

Berroco’s Vintage line of yarns is ideal for just such a purpose. They’re all super soft, machine washable, made with nylon so your socks will wear well, come in a bunch of pretty colours, and come in DK, Worsted and Chunky/Bulky weights, and they’re all affordably priced, so you’ll still be able to afford to go discount hunting after the holidays.

CHECK OUT OUR CURATED LIST OF KNITTING SKILLS

Ribbing Hack

  • When doing a K2P2 rib (also known as a 2×2 rib) always go down a full mm in size. 2×2 rib is looser that stocking stitch and you need the smaller needlet to get the proper tension.
  • K1P1 rib (1×1 rib) is naturally nighter than the 2×2, and you don’t need to go down as much to get the right tension (half a mm is fine).

Fairlee

FAIRLEE are a super pretty, but not particularly involved pair of socks. The pattern is written for 2 circular needles (see tuturial working in the round on 2 circular needles), but you can use any sock knititng technique you prefer. They are worked from the toe-up using judy’s magic cast-on (turkish cast-on) and increases, and the heel is done with wrap & turn short rows. The stitch pattern is an intro level fair isle technique of 4 stitches. The cuff is finsihed with a tubular bind-off, but you can do any type of bind-off you like.

NEW FREE PATTERN Elena Children’s Tee

Elena Pullover By Åsa Buchta

If you didn’t catch it, Berroco just published a new free pattern, a darling colourwork kids tee made with Berroco Vintage DK. Worked from the top down in one piece, it’s a perfect next step for less experienced knitters who want to expand their skills, or a simple yet effective knit for more advanced knitters. Since it’s knit from the top-down, you can also lengthen the sleeves and make it into a full pullover.

The yarn, Berroco Vintage DK, is soft, machine washable, easy to work with, knits great in stranded colourwork, is long wearing, and is very affordable … ie. great for projects for kids! See below for a couple other yarns that are equally perfect for this project.

Skill Level: Intermediate

KITS Classic Baby (DK)

Today’s adorables are brought to you courtesy of two DK weight yarns great for baby things, Berroco Vintage DK and the brand new Berroco Vintage Baby. Vintage DK is my favourite yarn in the vintage, of all 4 it looks and feels the most like a yarn made from all natural fibres (it handles fair-isle and socks really beautifully). Vintage Baby has a slightly silkier texture, comes in a palette perfect for babies and kids. It also comes in affordable 50g pull-skeins, so the yarn doesn’t need to be wound up, and you don’t have to buy a ton of yarn to make a small project … which is also great if you want to get into colourwork.

BTW, thank you for the kind letters and comments, they really make my day! Whenever I can I pass on the love and forward them to our colleagues who help us make our magic happen.

Pre-Order

These kits are a special-order and we aren’t stocking them in the store on a regular basis, but you have the option to order them any time (they will be available to purchase as long as the manufacturer makes it available to us). That said, we keep  Berroco Vintage in stock all year and are always reordering, so if the yarn is in stock your kit will be available very quickly. Your kit will ship or be available for pick-up once it arrives, and we will contact you. If you need your kit for a specific date please let us know and we can find out if it’s feasible.
